Jeremiah blinked at Samantha for several seconds. “I’m sorry?”
“I believe he has a celestial’s mark”, Samantha replied.
“Yeah that’s what I thought you said.”
“And you don’t believe me.”
“Milady, do you not hear yourself?”
“Of course I do. Why do you think I’m checking my line of thinking?” She remarked pointing to the books laying on her desk.
“Because you are talking about the celestials here. Even the pagans say that they don’t exist.”
“Probably, don’t exist”, Samantha corrected.
“That is not helping Milady. We are talking about a teenage dragon here. What on earth does he have to do with Celestials?”
“I… I don’t know." She admitted. Jeremiah stayed silent whilst Samantha recomposed herself. “He’s an enigma. A dragonkin falls from the sky. Absolutely terrified out of his mind. Panics when he sees the scales on his skin.”
“And trips over his own tail”, Jeremiah finished.
“Precisely. It makes no sense. And a mind wipe spell wouldn’t explain his fall to earth.”, She then turns back to her books tapping the desk for emphasis, “And I know I read about it somewhere. Ancient historical records talk about them.”
“Milady, those are just about mythological legends surely?”
“All myths start from somewhere Morau. Be it a fairy tale or an ecological disaster. Trust me, I didn’t become a Master in Ancient History just for show. The celestials played a key role in ancient cultures.” She spoke whilst writing some notes down.
Jeremiah approached her. “But wasn’t that just a means to keep people in line? Do not steal otherwise the celestial of law will break your fingers?”
“Depends on whether they were talking about Eunomia or Themis. One was cruel and the other more empathetic but I can’t remember which one right now. I’m a master in Ancient History not Mythology now stop distracting my trail of thought,” She said, shooing Jeremiah away with her hand.
He backed away as commanded but didn’t leave. Like Samantha he too wanted to know what was up with the boy. The last time he remembered seeing someone that scared was back when he was in the Lich Kings army. He shook his head to remove that dark memory and stood guard by the door.
Samantha went through the books for half an hour before finally stopping. She lifted up a book and adjusted her glasses as she reread the page. Jeremiah, noticing her shift, spoke, “Have you found something?”
A small smile formed on her face. “I believe I have Jeremiah. Oh the poor baby.” She said, shaking her head slightly.
Jeremiah tilted his head slightly, “What do you mean?”
She stood, placing the book down gently and headed out of her study. “Come Morau. We have a traumatised dragonkin that needs our help.”
Jeremiah followed diligently, “What have you found?” She said nothing. Jeremiah opened his mouth to ask again but decided against it. Either way he’ll be finding out sooner or later.
In no time they were back at the hospital and went to the room holding the young dragonkin. “I think it’s best that I go in alone Morau”. She said.
Jeremiah shook his head. “I’m sorry Milady. When people are scared they can become irrational and your safety is paramount.”
Samantha sighed, “Very well but stay in the corner and try and not draw attention to yourself. Otherwise the poor boy will think you’re out to hurt him again.” He grunted with a nod.
Samantha opened the door and found the dragonkin was crouched against a wall. Staring at his hands with the same panicked expression he had before. Seeing the door open, he pushed himself backwards.
“It’s alright,” Samantha said in a soft calm voice as Jeremiah kept to a corner as promised.
Samantha carefully sat down on a chair while the young dragon stared at her in horror. “No harm will come to you. I can promise you that.” The young dragon didn’t respond but he kept his eyes on her. Progress at least.
“Why don’t we start again. My name is Samantha. What is yours?” Her voice was calm and soft. It was not the first time she had to deal with people having mental shutdowns. Usually due to overworking but this shouldn’t be too far removed for her to get through to the young dragon. He didn’t say anything. She smiled, “That’s ok we can leave it if you want. What would you like to talk about?” Again nothing. Perhaps she was taking the wrong approach.
She got up from her chair and headed to the window, back turned to the dragonkin. “It’s a beautiful day. Not even a cloud in the sky and a gentle breeze. Perfect for my flowers, the ground isn’t too dry so I won’t need to water tonight. Gives me some more free time to read, especially out in this. You can’t beat it can you?” She joyfully said. Leaning against the window pane she just lets the moment sink in. No need to rush anything and let things happen at their own pace.
“Richard”, She turned to look at the dragonkin. “My name is Richard” mumbled the dragonkin. She smiled warmly.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Richard. Tell me, do you like this weather?” She said softly trying to keep the conversation going.
“It’s… It’s fine I guess”
“On a day like this, what would you like to do?”
“I… I dunno. Just… Hang I guess”
“Do you mean with others or from the roof?” She pointed up to the beams of timber in the room. Richard looked at her completely befuddled. “You don’t know what I mean do you?” Richard shook his head. “Because, you weren’t ever a dragon were you?”
Jeremiah did his best to keep his face neutral and Richard’s eyes opened widely in shock. “How did you…”
“Tell me Richard.” She then got down to his level “Where did you come from? What was your “world” like?”
