Mwezi is a member of the hyena clan during the reign of King Mohatu, having been born back when hyenas were still allowed to live in the Pridelands. She is born with unusually pale, white fur, and her eyes are very sensitive to sunlight. Because of this, she spends most of the day hidden away in a den, only choosing to go out hunting at night. When she becomes the clan’s new matriarch following her mother’s passing, Mwezi decrees that from now on, they will go hunting for food starting at sunset. Understandably, the clan has difficulty adjusting to this new lifestyle at first, but under Mwezi’s leadership, they soon become adept at hunting at night.

During one such night, Mwezi and her clan attempt to pick off a member from a large herd of water buffalo. This stirs up the herd, and the hyenas end up chasing them through the Pridelands, causing all sorts of chaos in their wake. King Mohatu and the Lion Guard work quickly to try to save as many animals as possible, but during all the mayhem, the guard leader Lutalo and his Bravest and Fastest end up getting trampled in the stampede. The two other males were killed, but Lutalo suffers a serious injury that leaves him paralyzed from the waist down, leaving him unable to ever run again. Once everything had finally calmed down, Mohatu had Mwezi and her clan banished from the Pridelands for all the damage they had caused.

Mwezi and her clan end up settling down in the Elephant Graveyard, a place beyond the Pridelands’ borders, that was littered with the remains of elephants and many active geysers. The clan would have plenty to eat whenever an aging or sick elephant came there to die, but other times, they resort to poaching food from either the Outlands or sneaking back into the Pridelands on occasion. The latter wasn’t ideal, as any hyena that was caught entering was severely punished. But still, Mwezi and her clan managed to get by, and she managed to hang onto her title as matriarch for years, gaining a few scars from fights and hunting. While her clan members became hardened by life in the graveyard, Mwezi secretly felt remorse over getting them banished from the Pridelands, and hoped that the following generation would do better than her.

Mwezi later passes away from an illness shortly before the birth of her grandchildren, with some believing that her ailment was somehow tied to her white pelt. Her eldest daughter Zuhour succeeded her as the new matriarch, and the clan became much more savage under her rule.

Mwezi’s design was adopted from Witch-Doctais46 a few years back with some slight tweaks by me. She was originally named Rangi and was Shenzi’s daughter, but I decided to rework some things and make her Shenzi’s grandmother instead.

Also, in the Six New Adventures book “How True, Zazu”, there’s an allusion to an event where the hyenas caused mayhem in the Pridelands when they chased a herd of water buffalo through the kingdom. I decided to have that be the reason why the hyenas weren’t allowed to set foot in the Pridelands, but I decided to move it back to have it take place during Mohatu’s reign instead of Mufasa’s. I mean, the Six New Adventures books were never officially canon anyway, so I don’t see why I can’t.
