Familiar thing that that gimp crashes when youre saving, If i remember right, you need more RAM memory to your computer, like i did upgrade from 448MB to 2558MB (Been gimp user 2-3 years)
Also Gimp is had little problems with text thingie but i think its fixed atm.. :p
