I SERIOUSLY hate Garfield, Ever since he started acting more like Snoopy, I stopped reading the strip, and that was in the late 80s.
Fun Fact, Jim Davis hasn't drawn Garfield the strip in years, he has an artists haram in his studio that draws Garfield and US Acres. I knew Brett Koth who drew for Davis on US Acres, he said Davis has massive 'guild sheets' of poses, facial expressions of each character featured, Davis writes up the strip with a series of numbers and his team of artists match the numbers and draws them up. I noticed in the late 90s that he once had a seriously decent inker doing the inks, you could see the quality. I think that guy moved onto Either Marvel comics or Dark Horse as an inker.
I met Davis in 92 at the Syndicated cartoonists awards in Scottsdale Arizona, I was invited in by Bud Grace who draws up the Piranha Club strip. There I found out that Davis has a massive ego, him and another forgettable strip artist were like 'My farts don't stink' types. But otherwise I was in syndicated comic strip heaven. It was there I was sitting down at a table, sketching Red Shetland, when this familiar gray haired guy sat next to me, watched me sketching. Then asked "So whens the next issue of Red Shetland coming out?" I pause and look shocked, "You know of my comic?" He says, "My Secretary is a subscriber! And I read the comic after she's read it." Then thrusts his hand out and introduces himself "Hi, Charles Schulz!! My friends call me Sparky!" I was all Hoomina Hoomina Hoomina And he smiles, and says "Please, call me Sparky!" I was in heaven!! We chatted up a good 30-45 minutes just he and I. I SERIOUSLY regret not getting a sketch from him!!! But everybody after that I did, and met like 95% of all the syndicated comic strip artists that weekend!!
