And here is the QUINTESSENTIAL New World Bird, The Hummingbird. This is a female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. They lack the red throat of the males. Out of the DOZENS of species of Hummingbirds in the New World, this is the ONLY species found in Eastern U.S. and Canada. aand it is ONLY found in the Eastern U.S. and Canada. Their wings beat at 60 beats PER SECOND, producing a low bass-like hum that gives the bird its name. They do make sounds with their mouths that sounds EXACTLY like a mouse squeaking. They are the SMALLEST and MOST VICIOUS birds in the world, often killing their mates and offspring if given the chance. They have no fear of humans...they fear NOTHING! They come and scold me, squeaking and buzzing at me if their feeders get empty. They are quite photogenic, and birders delight in photographing them. When they migrate, they cross the 1,500 mile wide Gulf of Mexico in LESS than 15 hours! They fly non-stop at 100 miles an hour (160 kph) staying about 5 feet (1.66meters) above the waves. Exhausted, they reach the coast of Venezuela and immediately seek food! This hummer has been coming to my yard for about 5 years now. I call her, Hummercane Camille. I saw her this morning chasing two more females out of my yard squeaking furiously! Keep your eyes open!
