He is tasked with praying for the souls in purgatory and for the departed, often during nocturnal ceremonies held in November.
His role is to keep the memory of the dead alive and to gather the prayers of the living, which are later offered as relief to ease the suffering of the tormented souls.
He is said to possess abilities such as spiritual consolation and communication with the dead.
He carries a bell made of bronze or aged iron — an audible signal that the tormented souls can perceive, allowing them to draw near and gather for prayer.
He bears a lantern whose light is neither fire nor electricity. It illuminates only a few steps ahead — for the Animārum and for the souls that follow just behind him. It is the trace of hope that keeps the soul from falling into the abyss of no return.
The Vocātor Animārum holds a profound understanding of souls, enabling him to draw the Schemata Animae, a diagram through which he interprets spiritual pain and channels his prayers toward the soul’s points of redemption.
