Two masked men ventured through the vast sands. The desert was cooling off under the bright stars, letting the day’s heat slowly dissipate. Leaving the capital far behind them, they headed towards the rocky wastes, where the desert met mountains.
- So… – the one with the mask of a wolf started a topic out of boredom. – What do you think of the newb?
- Zellis…? – the smaller man bearing the cat-shaped mask thought for a moment. – …I’m having difficulties calling him a newb, to be frank. He’s disciplined, carries out orders nearly flawlessly and promptly. He’s also pleasant to chat with, and - something some people here lack - rather eloquent for someone we scouted from the guard. An anomaly for sure.
- Disciplined you say? Ha! – The wolf almost laughed, brushing off the cutting remark – He’s the most hot-headed and absent-minded person I’ve seen in my life! I have no idea how he’s still alive, really. – He kicked a pebble when they arrived in a more rocky area where large boulders provided some protection from the cold night gust. Then he turned around to face his comrade. – Didn’t he expend himself in one shot last week when you were still surrounded by the worms!?
The cat kept silent for a moment, not really wanting to make excuses for his fellow agent when he was at fault. He crossed his arms and looked up at his canine companion, his unnaturally bright blue eyes shimmering from behind the mask.
- I must admit that he’s hot-headed in battle…wasting a lot of energy in simple attacks…but…I think we’re misjudging his way of fighting…
- Really? – The wolf snarled back, looking disgusted even from behind a lifeless mask which bore no expression. – I thought you’re smarter than just saying, „oh he’s just misunderstood!”, aren’t you? You both could’ve become worm food!
- Look who’s hot-headed now. Please let me finish. – He scolded the other in a sharp tone, and the wolf’s frame momentarily became smaller. – You lot probably didn’t notice, but for me, who specializes in observation of the magical plane, I can tell you that the way Zellis is harnessing magical energy is highly abnormal. His output doesn’t match what his body should be reasonably able to withstand. He did not „expend” himself then…well…not in a conventional way at least. I believe he never did, no matter how scorched he may have looked to us…
- …also it wasn’t that dangerous, don’t exaggerate.
- This might be impressive on paper, but it doesn’t really address the problem, does it? – The wolf was getting annoyed. He liked the newbie, but he considered him more of a hazard to work with, rather than someone he could just leave a task to.
- I don’t know, truly. – the cat spread his arms helplessly. – In one moment he looks like he’s spacing out, and a few seconds later we witness a display of both power and control that the best mages can only dream about. True - it’s messy and usually too loud for our job, but no one else really even has to bother drawing their weapon when it comes to fighting monsters.
The wolf huffed. His comrade had a point: ever since they accepted that wingless dragon into their ranks, he was usually the one handling the beast slaying. He avoided fighting people like a plague, but tell him to dispatch a monster, and the creature is dead in seconds. He grumbled and turned around once again to resume their trek.
- Whatever you say. Let’s just go get rid of those murderous blood-crazed maniacs and head back.
The cat sighed, fixed his hood, and followed behind the wolf. Their blades were going to get busy pretty soon…
I didn't initially plan to release it, but this doodle has been in my WIP folder for months. I initially made it to showcase Zellis's wings. I cleaned it up a bit, and used it as an opportunity to do some writing. I needed some low-effort creative outlet today.
