I feel it's fun to note that the Magical poles are labeled V (Vitus) and M (Mortus) and that the Death Pole is basically right where most of our main characters live.

Really not that dissimilar, except instead of producing horrible poisonous smoke and smog, these release magic and light onto the planet

To quote a YouTuber’s review of Arcanum, “magic is nonsense that does whatever it wants” although the concern over Mana reserves is a good question here.

I'll get to it on another of these, but their biggest problem is actually that the use of magic weakens the reality of the world and with it as shallow as it is, enough widespread use can cause the whole thing to tear itself apart

Okay that is significantly worse than the scenario I was visualizing, (in which a wizard causes the heat death of their mini-universe by using up all the Mana casting a spell to cause someone’s/something’s death by heat).
