Our poor protagonist hasn't had any real time to process his identity crisis yet and has at least latched onto his shaman hat as an anchor for who he is, or how he can identify what is still 'him'.
He needs to get less lost in how different he is on the outside, something everyone and everything around him seems to constantly be reaffirming, and realize that he is still intrinsically himself.
Like Granny Weatherwax at the end of Witches Abroad when she is challenged by Death to find 'the one that's Real' to escape the mirrors.
