The forest was quiet—too quiet. Perched on a mossy root, the owl archer tightened his hunter-green hood and listened. Leather straps creaked softly as his wings shifted, twin swords resting at each hip, twin quivers brushing against his sides. On his shoulder, Ruviken the gerbil companion sat perfectly still, whiskers twitching.
Five unknown men emerged through the trees, moving with the confidence of those who believed the woods belonged to them.
The owl didn’t give them a chance to speak.
In one seamless motion, he drew an arrow and released—thwick—pinning the first man’s sleeve to a tree, disabling him instantly. Ruviken squeaked a command and leapt from his shoulder, scrambling down to nibble through the man’s belt pouch, scattering his smoke bombs before he could reach for one.
Two more attackers charged. The owl met them mid-stride, wings flaring wide. His swords flashed in a graceful X-pattern, not lethal, but precise—striking joints, wrists, and knees. Both men dropped with gasps of pain, unable to continue.
The fourth tried to flank him, only for Ruviken to spring from a fallen branch and land on the man’s face, clawing and squeaking like a demon. The distraction was enough for the owl to send another arrow gliding past—cutting the attacker’s rope weapon in half.
The fifth man hesitated, seeing his companions defeated by one owl and one fearless small ball of fur. The owl gave him one chance to flee, his golden eyes glowing under the hood.
The man chose wisely and ran.
Ruviken climbed back up the owl’s arm, settling into place like a tiny furry commander proud of the battle’s outcome. The owl brushed a feathered hand across his companion.
“Good work,” he murmured.
Then, without a trace, they vanished into the forest’s shadows once more.
