Meet Amprax. Very energetic and socially akward alien Deejay. She was originaly one of the critters in the "Demons" for the Cosmic Horror doodles that I made last year around St. Nicholas' day.
And I can hear lot of you already saying that this axolotl looking thingy doesn't share any resembles to what classifies as Cosmic Horror - and you would be pretty much correct.
<...>
With the little lore that I have so far, it is actually funny that the "species" Amprax, Strepitus, Ketch and other similars canonically can change in looks and in fuctions as much as the story and usage of these characters.
The mentioned Ketch originally began as my interpretation of the POV guy in Macro/Micro interactive that
Fenrir had on Writting.com. In their case I wanted Ketch to be a low eldritch entity cursed by much higher being to have his souls torn into multiple pieces and those pieces then being cursed into vessels that resemble human to mortal observer - Even Ketch himself was made unaware of this fact and their memories got replaced by fake ones, however, I hinted on it being a case by scene where a human wasn't sure how the POV guy looks like as she was partially able to see through the cognitohazard. His name alone was play with synonyms as Ketch is type of sailboat and thus it was my way to call him "vessel" with extra linquistic steps. And if Fenrir was okay with the inevitable revelation that the one of the POV in his interactive wasn't human, then I planned the reader learning that Ketch has ability to feel the other shards of their soul in the other timelines and slowly trying to figure out how to himself back into single being while helping both the macros and micros from whatever the Eldritch Entity, which put him into situation he finds himself in the interactive with the other POVs. Ketch's story has two types of ending: First type of endings was that Ketch never fully learned his true nature and tried to live the rest of his life as "human" with other micros who got misplaced into the macro sized worlds; The Second type of endings was Ketch dealing with learning about his previous life as slave soldier for the Higher Eldritch Entity, known as "The Great Serpent", who was cursed because he shown symphathy towards a mortal.
After I and Fenrir agreed that my idea was not fitting for his interactive, I began wonder what to do what to do with the idea Ketch was builded on. Personally I'm that kind of person who often gets various ideas for books or animations or games but rarely realizes them and the idea idea for Ketch was builded upon concept for RPG game.
To this day I still do not have name for it, however my current idea is gameplay-wise a mix of Kingdom Hearts and pocket-monster-gendre games. With the current vision: The game would take place in a realm in between reality-bubbles of regular universes - sort of immaterial Xen if you will - and would have 2 campains. The main campain would follow a soul of anthro kirin-like woman who got into this realm seeking personal vendeta against a previously-mortal being who is servant of the previously mentioned High Eldritch Being and who resides in this realm. Along the way, this protagonist would stuble upon Ketch's brother and other "abominations" living in the said realm.
With that said, all the current lore about these "abominations" count with the theoretical game mechanics I imagined this RPG having.
With how the realm works, the mortal beings get stripped of their physical shells and only their souls would navigate this world between worlds. The species of the protagonist from the main campain have spike at the end of their which in this realm would transform into full blade (still attacked to the tail) which the protagonist would use as single-hand sword and which would be the main meelee weapon.
Unless you would be absolute bloodthirsty maniac, you would quickly find out that the abominations, being the natives of the Realm, are even more transformative than the soul of your playable character. Lore reason being that each abomination begins its life as blob of light with consciousness and through observing echos from the surounding universes or by other influences can morph its look and its capabilities - their first ability being related to how they "feed" themselves as you can really find sustenance for beings that operate on chemical reactions in their bodies. This is handy as you suddendly can have party of cretures which can learn how to heal psychotic/necrotic damage to your PC's soul, learn how to make transportation across the realm easier or most importantly be your weapons. Another cool ability a abomination can learn is to make substances which mimics properties of substance from material worlds like metals. These specific abominations usually use these substances for creating armor, however, the metal one specifically has another lore/story important use.
And since you and the abominations are not physical in this Realm but living energy, the temporary fusion option. Do you have in a party a abomination who knows how to transform themselves into bow and another one who knows how to become some fort of shaft weapon? - With enough energy, they can combine themselves into something like crossbow! Or do you have buddy who is horse-snake thing and knows how to be lance and one critter which is living radially-symetrical ornithopter? - Congratulations! They can be your hand-held helicopter rotor so you can Mary-Poppins across obsticles in the terrain which decided to somehow obey to gravity in some places. And these combos would get crazier and more powerful the more abominations join together and more extra energy they have stored.
Now you might have Question: "Okay, Petr... Why are you telling us all of this? And why you described how these critters turn into weapons? Do they want to eat your soul or something?" And I would say that: Yes. They want your soul. ...However, not through their own will.
You see: A regular abomination is very much happy feeding on energy carried by photons or charching on eletricity and just traveling around the realm to explore the world into which they were woken into... And another thing that these creatures share is their vulnerability to being taken advantige by entities outside of their Realm as they do not know any better. And let's say that these critters get found by ancient megalomanical eldritch worm-like being made of evershifting flesh that spends light-years in lenght and hungers after fragments of literal gods who has "manipulation" as its middle name and uses it to lure few of these abominations to become slave-soldiers for her and her most royal-servants - Then you have recipe for multiuniversal "trouble" and you just described exploitive relationship self-proclaimed goddess that makes others call her "Mother" and these abominations have.
And remember how I said that that the substances created by abominations that mimic metals have another use? If you look at the designs that I made so far, especially for the adominations that are grouped as "Demons", then you notice that they have masks that fully cover their faces and that they have all these spiked collars and cuffs. Well... As you now could guess, they aren't decorative or just garment distinguishing "Demons" from others. When morphed by powers of Beings such as the "Mother" you suddently have intem that binds the will and changes personality of the abomination that is forced to wear them. And let me tell you something: Those spikes on these garments have points on both ends and can move back and fort... So now imagine being in shoes of Abomination that previously knew nothing but innocence and would never harm another being, is being forced to fight and destroy your master(s) order you and if you have strong will to keep at least pieces of your original personality then your disobedience gets constantly physically punished via the "chains" you were forced to wear.
And suddently attacking some random soul of a material being that came into your home Realm doesn't sound so out of option to prevent yourself being potencially punished by increasing pain, does it?
And that is certainly a terrible fate. So is there any way to put these enslaved abomination out of their misery? Well... These garments aren't unbreakable, so if you would focus your attacks on them instead of the being who is forced to wear them, them maybe you could free them and help them remain control over themselves? [winks]
So how all what I just said ties to this goober who likes mixing electronic music?
Well: Amprax here would be one of the minor bosses you would face in this idea for a game. And even tho she wouldn't be the biggest threat, she definitely would be a unique one.
Speaking of her abilities first: Amprax is sort of anomaly when it comes to the abominations, as due to the types of echo she encountered she grew in love with music and went even so far to use energy carried by sound waves - Yes, this gal produces music and also consumes it in the most literal sence. And because the Realm isn't really ideal enviroment for development of music within the natural population, the music Amprax know comes from material beings from Surounding universes she heard through the echos. And for someone like her with such unusual interest, it would be hard for her to find conection amongst her kin - the only exception being older abomination after who Amprax took his amphibian-like apperance. And with Strepitus mentioned, this lead us to Amprax's secondary ability and that is substance materialization. However, unlike abominations like Strepitus who specialize on this ability, Amprax uses this ability to create various gadges and trickets - including her headphones and multiple loudspeakers that float around her or are part of her and Strepitus'garments.
Honestly: I did not really have solid idea yet when it comes to the main protagonist's and her party's first encounter with Amprax as I want to avoid her being depicted in wrong light than what i have in mind. I'm currently not sure if Amprax would be fully free or in process of being indoctrinated into the Mother's slave army. However, what is set in stone would be that the main protagonist would meet Amprax some time after Strepitus was taken from her by the Mother's servants and turned into her slave soldier - her music being mostly a coping mechanism at this point - and that this gal would mean no harm to the group.
Being material being, would try to impress the main protagonist. Thinking that she would get quickly get over it by this way, the Main protagonst and the abominations accompaning her could try to dance to the music Amprax would be playing as one of the options how to deal with the encounter. If the player would keep the playable characters to groove long enough and not set clear line that they had enough, Amprax would get overjoyed from finally meeting someone who shares another people who share the same enthusiasm and longing for the time she only had with Strepitus, she completly looses herself in the dance - which is when her first "boss fight" would begin.
Due to the "party" room made of the materials materialized by Amprax's will, trying to stop Amprax by regular methods in a room that acts based of her emotions would be out of the options. So how do you would actually stop this party turned into insane ride? Ketch's brother would suggest you to try to keep on dancing while he tries to sneak up to Amprax and cripple Amprax's necklace which she uses to power all that chaos you would find yourself in.
And as you try to keep up with the groove, it distracts Amprax enough that your friend actually manages (after multiple struggles) to sneak up to her and snap her necklace ornament - finally stopping the party.
Unless you would succeed on what reaction to take, Aprax would intepret your actions as you trying to decieve her so you can harm her and leaves in hurry while crying. After this, you would move on on your guest and likely strug it off.
While you would be dealing with other foes, Amprax - now fully heartbroken - would get found by The Mother's extension. Amprax being the most emotionally vulnerable at that moment, the Mother would manipulate her to become her servant. And by accepting The Mother's "gift", Amprax would get corrupted into The Clamor, similiary how Ketch would turn into The Great Serpent.
Some time after this transformation, you would encounter Amprax for the 2nd time on your way to deal with one of the main bosses. Amprax would give you speech similar to the one I wrote under the drawing depicting her corrupted form before the actual boss fight with her would begin. And this time Amprax would use her abilities for attacks.
After beating this boss fight, and not kiling Amprax, you would get two options:
1) Offering Aprax a place in your team.
2) Leaving her behind.
If you would choose to take Amprax under your wing despire what happened, you get her as one of secondary teammates. In the case of the main campain, Amprax would fully utilize her abilities for when turned into her weapon form as sound cannon and would be used offensively.
But by leaving her behind would obviously lock her from being used for the rest of the main campain, however, it would unlock her usage in the 2nd theoretical campain that I did not mentioned so far. In this campain where you would follow the journey of Zuzana, human woman who befriended Ketch, and early on meet Amprax after what happened in the main campain. Feeling pity for the pathetic and broken axolotl-shaped abomination, Zuzana would convince Ketch to take Amprax into their team. Af you would allow Amprax to join your party in this secondary campain, then thank to the emotional support from her teammates Amprax would become mainly defensive and actually use her love for music in healthy manner to give her teammates buffs.
