Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, Part 8
Walking to school, Elisa was humming a tune to herself. She had been thinking about her time as the fireworks-launching cat, Lightshow. She thought about the epic fight she had with a strong horse and the strange, cold, man who helped her fight. It was all a lot to take in, but the highlight of that time had to have been the cold guy. She had a new friend both as a hero and as another student. This was something she kept close to her heart and all over her mind, so close that she didn’t see the guys in the middle of the hallway.
She fell back after bumping into a bull who just turned and stared at her. Elisa came back to reality, saw what she just started, and simply fell back into her simple facade.
“Oh, hey…” She said with a slow speech, “How long were you standing there?”
“Watch where you’re going next time.” the bull said, then the other two guys with him moved up.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry..” Elisa said, wobbling back to her feet, “I just… yeah…” She chuckled a bit.
“Dang stoner..” The bull rolled his eyes.
“Come on, she’s worth less than nothing.”
Her ears fell back, their words striking like a needle through her chest. She tried not to let it get to her, but it’s so hard when she knows what heroism she does. She simply winced, and walked to her locker.
Walking into chemistry class, she had at least one thing to look forward to, and that was Isaac. The weirdo was like her, what with the gas mask and cool air. He seemed like the opposite of “the stoner girl.” She watched him on in, and he was huffing a lot more, his eyes looking at least angry and he didn’t look at anyone.
“Heeeeeeeeey..” Elisa said with a dazed giggle.
That didn’t get much of a response from her.
“Something…” Elisa paused, “Is something the matter?”
“Have you seen the news?” Isaac asked, “What they were saying?”
“I can’t watch TV,” Elisa says, “I’m lucky if no one hogs it.”
“Did you hear about the bank robbery that happened?” Isaac said, “Turns out one guy fought off the police while the others got away. And the people who helped bring him down were seen as villains too.”
Elisa tilted her head, “What?”
“Cops tried arresting people who helped catch the robber.” Isaac said, and rested his head on the table, “Why is it so hard to believe only the cops are good people out here?”
Elisa stared at him rather quietly, “How’d you know someone else was fighting the bank robbers?”
“It’s kind of obvious when they don’t attack the cops.” Isaac said, “And yet the police still want to treat them no different than criminals.
“Yeah…” Elisa sighed, “It… it stinks doesn’t it… The good people do get thrown in with the scum they helped fight against…” she started muttering, but looked away more and more.
