Rayleigh is a playwright, actor, and musician who puts on extravagant one-man plays, using his magic and music to excite audiences. These shows are so impressive that he has become a legend in entertainment. Known by many names, some of which reflect his most famous plays ("The Moon Cat" and "Ser Pounce"), Rayleigh Clovers is a cat who is easily loved by all. His craving for creativity knows no bounds. He travels the world for gold and inspiration, even facing dangerous foes and exotic locations just to use for his stories and songs. Rayleigh wants to live stories---not just tell them. The true reason for his wandering is to learn of his true origins. A cat always alone, Rayleigh's earliest memories are of his childhood in the woods. No contact with other Tabaxi or anyone for that matter. He lived as a true animal. Scavenging, hunting, and using trees as shelter to survive. One day, human poachers attempted to kill Rayleigh for his fur. Desperate and depraved men who knew of black markets flooded with gold for those who could procure rare furs. Cut, beaten, and caged; young Rayleigh faced certain death at that moment until he heard a song. An elf woman appeared. Helaena Weavesong lived in that wood for 100 years and did not tolerate her home being disturbed. The master bard, brandishing a golden lyre cast her spell, putting the poachers into a deep sleep. Helaena was old but appeared young and lively. She was wise but had a playful nature. Most importantly, she was as sentimental as she was powerful. She loved nothing more than her home in the woods but considered everything living within her family. It was only a matter of time before she found Rayleigh living there alongside her. Helaena adopted Rayleigh as her own. Her house in the woods contained a wondrous garden where she would grow exotic flowers, fruits, and vegetables to sell in town. She would exchange the money for books on magic, music, and history. Rayleigh grew up in an environment that showed how nature, magic, and music worked in harmony. He grew up incredibly curious. The stories and histories inspired him and the townspeople would smile when he performed tricks. Helaena taught him how to play music. How to reach the Weave and hone his magic from his music. Helaena was his mother as well as his master. Despite Rayleigh's immense happiness, something always nagged at his heart. "Why did I grow up in the woods? Why not a home like this--a family like this from the start? Why don't I have a father? Where did I really come from?" Helaena did her best to calm his flickering heart. To teach him that what matters is the life he has now. He trusted her but never stopped wondering. Thinking. Hoping... "Do I have a real family?" Rayleigh grew into a rebellious cat. He would wander far from the woods, stay in town, perform more nights, longer nights in town. He would pester everyone new in town for knowledge of what he is. "A Tabaxi? Where can I find more of me? Silver like me? Golden eyes like me? Tell me where to go." Years passed as Rayleigh worked on his private family-finding scheme. He would have to leave Helaena. Rayleigh spends several nights at the inn, performing his latest and most grandiose play yet. Back at home, some thing happens. Rayleigh returns to the woods. Smoke appears from the treetops. The forest was ablaze. Who or what could have caused this tragedy is a mystery to Rayleigh to this day. All he remembers is how Helaena's house blackened in the flames. How her garden of flowers and fruits melted into dust. His cries for his mother drowning in the roar of flames. He blames himself. It was his neglect of Helaena that let this happen. He promises himself never to return. To the woods. To the town. The people saw him that day running through the streets, away from the burning forest. People always assume the worst, especially those different from them. In the end, the smiles for him of the years only hid a deeper suspicion and fear of him. "A dangerous animal that could never be kept burned its owner alive", they thought. The rumor would follow him for the majority of his life. Rayleigh the arsonist, the animal, the kinslayer. Years of traveling, wondering from town to city, to college to university, searching histories and encyclopedias for stronger magic, admirable stories, and information on his family. During that time he perfected his art. Rayleigh's art and travels evolved far enough and long enough that the rumor lost pace to his fame. "Killer" made way for "genius", "artist", and "playwright". While Rayleigh's quest for his true family continues with the scandal of his past laying mostly out of public discourse. Mostly... He still sees his lyre, his book, his clover and thinks of Helaena. She always told him that he was her luck. He believes she was right for the most part. Hopes Helaena is right that he was enough luck to find the answers he seeks. In the meantime, Rayleigh will create, adventure, sleep, play, charm, lie, sing, act, and fight his way through the realm in search of great stories.
