The final member of the pirate crew... and a man of scanty significance in the grand scheme of things. But he might just be the only pirate to survive all this to tell his own tale.
(Aside from Victor, who can't really die; and Mina, who's not really "from here", you know?)
Artie—the laziest pirate in the world—is really just a washed up, rather aimless kid. Of all people in Chapter 2, he probably has the most in common with Caleb in that he's the "black sheep" of a family that wound up doing quite well for themselves in the New World, all things considered.
Although Artie's polarity is the opposite of Caleb's in that he actually fell from grace, running away from an overbearing, borderline abusive patriarch to become something of a... well, freelance cat-burglar. Originally quite adept at strictly land-based thievery, he made one too many enemies in his brief career (and had one too many run-ins with the law, if the 'T' brand on his hand is to be believed) that he was forced to seek refuge aboard the only ship that would take him away from here and to somewhere far away, wherever that was.
Captain Barefang evidently saw something in his quartermaster's report on the young fellow, although whether that was his ability to shimmy in and out of a place unseen or the possibility of exploiting some hidden feline ferocity buried just underneath the surface, only he knows.
While the Captain may know what Artie's good for, everyone else is at a loss. The scrawny lion has next to no seafaring experience and the only thing he seems adept at stealing is shuteye. That must be why he's been assigned to Guillermo who's been tasked with keeping him honest—but at this point the only thing the mule has succeeded at is putting up with him.
Artie must at least look up to the mule, if the matching serpentine tattoo he's gotten is anything to go by.
