The Astronomer's Halo
We started a Pathfinder campaign at the start of the month! It's based on the Iron Gods AP, rewritten for 2e--which means I FINALLY get to play a character I have been sitting on for abt 4 years now, The Astronomer!
He describes himself as sort of...an unrealized aspect of Desna, the goddess of stars and luck. So far as he's aware, he wasn't supposed to be human, or even mortal...he was to exist more as an extention of Desna's consciousness, to help her chart the stars and ensure they maintained their course. Something happened, however, and he was dragged out of his chrysalis very, very undercooked--entirely lacking the divine capacity to navigate the cosmos and fulfill his intended purpose. However he recognizes that, despite whatever happened to rob him of his capacity to grow into his intended form of being and fullfil his purpose, Desna has gifted him with a life of his own to live out as he pleases, even if it's just a blink. He doesn't take it for granted, and is delighted for the chance to experience things, good and bad.
So far as he could tell, he had emerged as a human male. However, he recently did something that human males do not typically do. He woke up before sunrise feeling as though his own flesh has become an itchy shell that was uncomfortable to move around in. Standing over the sink after washing his face, he scratched at the back of his neck--and his skin cracked--splitting cleanly along the spine. He realized at that point that he was to shed his skin--much like a cicada. Which is exactly what he did. And upon emerging from the ghostly cast of himself, he grew a fresh new pair of mothlike antennae that serve to shed light and bolster his oracular abilities.
And so, it would appear that his metamorphosis is still underway after all.
