Asante is a hyena cub who is born towards the very end of Scar's reign, just days before Simba returned to overthrow him. After the surviving hyenas were ousted from the Pridelands following Scar’s defeat, her mother Kuwinda and her uncle Jakobi had a nasty falling out, which resulted in what remained of the hyena clan splitting in two. Jakobi led one half back to the Elephant Graveyard, while Kuwinda’s half eventually settled down in a patch of territory near the Msingi Pride.
While still a cub, Asante goes hunting for snake eggs one day, only to be attacked by a large constrictor who caught her in the act. Fortunately, a passing lion cub named Kopa heard her cries for help, and Asante was rescued from the large snake. Grateful for his help, Asante thanked Kopa for saving her, and the two cubs parted ways. After returning home to her family, Asante couldn’t stop thinking about Kopa, but she couldn’t tell her family about what happened as she knew that her parents would scold her for trying to mess with a large snake. Asante went by the Msingi Pride the following day hoping to see Kopa, but to her surprise, he was nowhere to be seen.
About a week later, Kopa ends up returning to the Msingi Pride. When he met Asante again, he explained to her that he lived over in the Pridelands, and that he would come to the Msingi Pride every other week to visit his father who lived here. The two cubs would often spend time together in secret whenever Kopa came to visit the Msingi, playing together and sharing each other's secrets. But despite their growing friendship, neither dared to introduce the other to their respective families.
As the two grew up, Asante and Kopa’s strong friendship soon began to blossom into something more. And when Kopa is forced to stay in the Msingi for an indefinite amount of time following an incident in the Pridelands, the two secret friends end up confessing their true feelings for each other. While Asante and Kopa both cared deeply for each other, they were both hesitant to tell their families after all this time. After he returns to the Msingi after paying a long awaited visit to his homeland, Kopa and Asante finally decide to tell their own families about their relationship. It doesn’t exactly go well, with both reiterating that lions and hyenas were natural enemies and weren’t meant to be together like that. Asante runs away from her family in anger, only to end up being attacked by lions from the Msingi Pride while looking for Kopa. Kopa comes to her aid and fights them off, but Asante is badly hurt. She would die without medical attention, and since the Msingi clearly wasn’t going to help her, Kopa throws Asante onto his back and runs off to the nearby Sunrise Pride, hoping that their own mjuzi might be able to help her. Along the way, Kopa is joined by Kanju, a member of Asante’s hyena clan, and Beba, a cheetah friend of Kopa, both of whom were determined to help their respective friends.
Fortunately, the four animals managed to make it to the Sunrise Pride in time, and Kopa is able to convince the pride’s mjuzi to treat Asante’s injuries. Once Asante is fully healed, Kopa is understandably hesitant to return to the Msingi after they almost killed his love, but after they leave, both are greeted by Asante’s mother Kuwinda, who found out about what Kopa did thanks to Beba. After she and Asante make amends, Kuwinda tells Kopa that he is allowed to stay in her clan’s territory, as he had earned her respect after what he did for her daughter. Kopa later reconnects with his family in the Msingi after their return, and while they accept Asante after seeing how much he cared for her, Kopa chooses to go live in her family’s territory instead.
While they made quite an unusual pair, the hyena and lion spend the rest of their lives together happily.

Asante is a hyena that Kopa befriends in the German TLK audio book “Friends for Life”. Years ago, I once had Kion paired with Jasiri in my TLK universe, and made up a headcanon where he left the Pridelands right before Kiara’s first hunt to go on a mission to save her. I of course scrapped that after Season 3 aired, but I decided to recycle the idea for a different lion x hyena pairing.
