ORIGINAL SPECIES presentation - Aviori! Meet Papaya!
I am absolutely thrilled to introduce my new character, just as important as main sona Gorchi, and also a newly created species by me - the Aviori! The character's name is Papaya! For now, this species is closed until I decide whether to keep it closed, make it semi-closed, or perhaps even open... I'm not sure yet.
The creature can be based on any bird, not just toucans. They are not strong fliers - rather, they're more like chickens, using their wings to jump high or soften falls. They can be depicted in their original bird-like form.
Aviori - [Avian] + [-ori]. "Avians" - birds, "-ori" - is a fantasy possessive suffix denoting the names of races, tribes, or species. Strictly speaking, their name means "bird-kin" or "feather-folk". This suffix also lends lightness and softness to the name, reflecting the very nature of these creatures - light and soft, like a cloud.
Species features: This species is semi-feral creatures with the lower limbs of kittens (or similar - small paws that walk on tiptoes), while the upper body is based on birds, complete with a bird-like tail. They are incredibly soft because their coating is made not of fur, but of bird down. If you touch one of these little birds with your hand, it will sink into cloud-like, fluffy down! They do not have front paws or hands - they have arms-like wings.
Additionally, their distinctive feature isn't just feathered down - it's also heart-shaped paw pads! This unique trait is shared by all members of the Aviori species.
Habitats: They live in forest settlements according to the habitat of their original birds. For example, tropical birds like parrots, toucans, and others live in tropical forests, and so on. They build small huts in trees and construct bridges between trees to move easily from home to home, leading ordinary daily lives.
Diet: Their diet matches that of their original bird species.
Sizes: They are small in size - their average height ranges from 50–60 cm for females and 70–80 cm for males. These figures correspond to the typical sizes of medium-sized real birds. However, their height varies depending on their species: for example, ostriches, storks, pelicans, and similar large birds will exceed these average measurements, while hummingbirds, sparrows, tits, and other small birds will fall below them. In the world of Aviori, size differentiation exists.
Communication: They communicate in a common bird language so that different bird species can understand each other, but they also has their own languages, according to their species.
Reproductive system: They are NOT mammals. Despite their mammalian hind legs, their reproductive system partially resembles that of true birds. They lack a cloaca but also do not possess mammalian-like testes. They have a slit with primary sexual characteristics and a sphincter.
Please share your thoughts on the design and their concept as a species! I’m really worried that there might be an identical creature on the internet that I simply haven't been able to find. I’ve searched extensively and for a long time, but I haven’t come across any creatures with the same anatomical concept. The closest things are anthro/semi-feral gryphons, teacup gryphons (
credit), or just anthro birds with bird legs instead of mammalian paws. If you've seen a character with the same idea, please let me know so I can reconsider the species closeness!
That's all I have for now. I don't have a Discord server for the species yet (not sure if there will be one) and there's no master reference sheet (with common info). However, I plan to make one and will share it with you soon! Also, let me know how interested you'd be in purchasing the right to own such a character for a small, symbolic amount? I'm considering making the species semi-closed with paid access, but the price will be low to keep the species easily accessible to anyone who wants one!
I'm really nervous to present this as ‘my own species’, but I’ve always dreamed of having my own character species. I tried to come up with something entirely from scratch before, but nothing clicked - and then recently this species emerged completely like... itself, without any mental strain to create something on a blank canvas XD This species is super simple in concept, so I’m worried it might not be original enough, or that characters like this might already exist... Anyway, I’m looking forward to your comments!🥺😰

I love this! I think anyone can make anything a closed or open species whatever they want... But I think it's about attitude and respect. This essentially IS just a bird + cat and I don't think if someone else made a birdcat they should have to pay you, nor should it upset you, unless they said "Hey this is my Aviori!". Especially considering they can be ANY bird with paws. I don't think any one person can limit the creativity of others. But your idea is cute and can certainly guide others to be creative as well. I think you should go ahead with your species dreams but not be upset if you see other similar creatures out there.
ahh thank you a lot! i just don't want to accidentally copy already existing creature and make them closed 🥲 yeah the idea is super simple, that's why I have a strong feeling that this already exists...🥲it's super easy to come up to and no one did it? I don't believe xD hopefully there's actually none of those so I can make an ownership. But yeah still rushing between make it free for everyone or paid (but cheap). If make it free, then people won’t know about the original authorship, because the species could spread so far across the internet from its starting point, and people simply won’t care about authorship or any rules - they might not even suspect such rules exists. In that case, control over the species is lost (for example, control over preserving their unique traits like paw pads and down), but I'm also afraid of making them semi-closed and coming off as self-important or arrogant in people's eyes😬😬😬
Well I don't think an idea like this can be claimed in the way you're wanting. I think it's fine to make the species and profit from it, but like I said, if someone else wants to make a bird cat and not call it an Aviori, I don't think they should have to call it such.
Something like this can just come up naturally from playing around with animals. For example, my Sona has optional cat paws and a bird form. She can shapeshift to anything in between the 3 animals shes made of, so essentially a form of my sona could look like this.
Any bird anthro with 'fwingers' and adding paws for fun, respectfully, doesn't automatically make it your species.
If someone wants to be under your umbrella and be part of a creative group, I think that's fantastic! But you're definitely right that this already exists out there. It's just too simple of a combination to be something claimable by only you. Even if you are first!
Like If I said I'm going to make a species that can be any Dog(or even a certain kind), but it has Hooves! I could absolutely make the species, and it would be a rare combination, but I don't feel i'd have the right to say no one else can combine those two things without crediting me. EVEN if my species was their first encounter with this specific combination.
However, for things like say, a Protogen, I think this is different. There are enough unique elements one wouldn't just 'accidentally' create one. It's ... possible but unlikely.
Like this species albeit has a bit more meat on it's bones, it does essentially include wings arms and paws in some combos: https://www.weasyl.com/~fancypigeon.....s/694388/birbs

Some of them have paws!
I would say it's up to you. You can still have them as a species and expand upon or not. They can still be a species!
I just believe that others may come up with bird top half, cat bottom half, and it may not be associated with your species since it's just a 2 animal combo at a base level visually.
I've seen plenty of species that are simple things like this and there's no harm in making rules for them and lore and doing what you like with them, but when it comes to very simple things like animal combos, it's just to be expected other similar things might exist not associated with the species itself.

Just to make sure i'm clear, I would love to see your species popularized. I wouldn't mind having one of my own and I think people would really love this and it could take off~
That being said, I think you have the creative freedom to make this species, and at the same time anyone has the creative freedom to make a bird arm wing + paw creature of any sort independently as well.
I found these two examples of previous existence:
A https://www.deviantart.com/sacrific.....-bra-790054497
B https://www.deviantart.com/neffiie/.....pt-1-825877315
And also made this folder collection to put example to my point that wing arms + paws is a common creative trope.

ty a lot for detailed opinion! examples you've sent still not countable because some of them has ears, some has bird legs as anthro birds.. the most close species to mine are Grifflets, yeah, but they still has bird legs for the most part, various tails (mammals and fantasy ones) and ears.. but still, after your comments i'm leaning towards making them open more now, still thinking but if i had 80/20 semi-closed/open, now i have the opposite haha. This critter is really easy and simple to accidentally recreate for those who haven't seen mine
Yeah I don't think anyone has made a 'species' specifically like this. Just characters that fall into the category like my Seagull sona with paws would and like this: https://www.deviantart.com/pamterri.....eirr-980766117
These would be just characters that look like Aviori!
I think the name is cute and clever too. Very catchy! I am excited to see where these go in the future.
Would be fun to draw my Seagull sona curiously peeking at a group of Aviori and comparing her paws and looks to them~
