A Dash of Demons 37 Future Apprentice
Chapter 37: Future Apprentice
The ride back to Jasmin’s house was a bit awkward, not to mention cramped. She, Dan, Kate, and In-ka were crammed in the back seat of her car while Lucy cradled Michelle in the front passenger seat. Rebecca did the driving, she may not have been 100%, but she was in the least bad shape.
They left the car that In-ka and Lucy had hijacked where they parked it, keys in the driver seat. The police would find it eventually and hopefully its former owner would just be happy to have it back as explaining things to the authorities would be complicated at best. Jasmin had made sure he wouldn’t remember what they looked like before leaving him but still.
Back at Jasmin’s house she and Dan dressed, found something of Jasmin’s that would fit on In-ka located some bath robes for Lucy and Kate, and wrapped Michelle up in a blanket. Then the quintet had a sit down. Or tried to, it was a bit quiet for a long moment at first. Between the exhaustion, both physical and mental, and the situation being just so out there that it was hard to even begin to approach, no one knew quite where to start.
Eventually though it was Rebecca that started, “Well…. At least I don’t feel overdressed anymore.”
That sent a bit of a chuckle up the group, loosening up some tension in the lot of them. Eventually Jasmin spoke, “Firstly, Rebecca, I want to apologize on behalf of all of us that anyone drained you, and Lucy, like they did, leeching off another is normally extremely forbidden and dangerous and the….”
“Cool, its fine” The large bear woman said waving her off, “I said it was ok before Michelle did it the first time.”
“You’re just… Fine?” Jasmin asked a little surprised, “It must have felt like… like your soul was being ripped out or …”
“OH it SUCKED I assure you” Rebecca said, “But that or die, Right?”
Jasmin blinked, “Well, yes. I’m just… Surprised how well you are taking this. I mean you learned that Magic was real and went face to face with a demon in the same day. Many people would be crashing out.”
Rebecca shrugged, “Most people don’t have those two to take care of.” She said and pointed at where Lucy was cradling Michelle, “I’ll save my existential nightmare for AFTER I know their ok.”
Lucy looked of from Michelle with puffy eyes, “You don’t need to… I’ll take care of her, I can do it.”
Rebecca scoffed, “And who’ll take care of you, furball? You’re barely coherent as is and that’s not even counting your new ridealong.”
“Ride along am I?” Lucy said in a very different voice, “I’m a bit more tha…”
“Civa, I was talking to Lucy, don’t interrupt.” Rebecca said, giving ‘red’ a look, “Lucy, as I was saying. I love you. I love her too. She’s not just your girlfriend, she’s mine, as are you and you aren’t ok right now. So let me play the stereotypical ‘Momma Bear’ for a bit and don’t act like you have to take care of our kitty on your own.”
Both Lucy and Civa were quiet, it wasn’t obvious who was in control this second, but she/they decided not to press the issue and just settled back down to hugging onto the unconscious blanket wrapped Michelle.
Kate was the next one to speak from her place on the couch. She winced from the bruising as she sat up to speak, “That one is what I have questions about. Red is a threat, or was? And won’t Vesta break out? In-ka can you really contain her?”
In-ka nodded, “I’m not 100% sure if we can trust red, but she used to be a good person, before Vesta got at her for 18 years. Speaking of Vesta, I can contain her fine. I’m the only one who can.”
“Why though? I mean I get that you’re a very good witch but…”
“I was almost literally made to contain her.” In-ka said, “I pulled the info out of red, as much as I could anyway. My people, from where I was before I was found. They bound themselves to spirits, like a pact or partnership thing. Red, or Civa, was my mother’s spirit partner. My parents were going to bind Vesta for me but were interrupted and it wasn’t finished. Red ended up locking her down in the back of my soul on the day I was born, but she couldn’t handle her and Vesta broke her over time. Anyway that’s why she can only be fully contained in me, not others.”
“Made to contain her.”
In-ka nodded, “Some kind of breeding program to make a better witch, I don’t know the details and red makes bad jokes whenever I ask, so …”
“OH my GOD who cares!” Lucy snapped, “The important part is what about my Michelle! She still hasn’t woken up!”
“Lucy…” Rebecca chided,
“NO… we focus on her now. In-ka. Jasmin. Fix my Michelle or so help me I…”
“Lucy, dear” Jasmin said leaning forward, we aren’t sure how fast she’ll recover, or if she’ll make a full one or not. She… how to explain, “She got into Kate and Vesta’s head by absorbing part of Vesta when she tried to weaken her. While in there Vesta tried to destroy her mind entirely. How close she was is hard to tell as yet.”
“So go into her mind and check!”
“That could risk hurting her more, even if I COULD do that.”
“BUT! HMmpHMM”
Lucy shut up as Rebecca came over and gave her a hug slamming the squirrels face between her bust, “Lucy, please. We’ll care for her, but we just have to wait, please.”
Lucy squirmed for awhile, but gave up under the much superior strength of Rebecca holding her head hostage. Once Lucy calmed down a bit, Rebecca turned to Jasmin, “I’ll handle them, but YOU are going to teach me magic.”
Jasmin blinked, “Uh. We don’t even know if you ca…”
“Not relevant. I WILL take care of them and magic caused this situation so I WILL learn about it, so I can take care of them better.”
“Well, I mean I suppose we can figure out something. If you can’t cast, though, just learning about it will be limited, but…”
“I’ll be here every Wednesday and Friday afternoon.” Rebecca said, standing up and picking both Lucy and Michelle up at once in one motion, “Now, someone has to drive us back to my place.”
Dan, Kate, In-ka and Jasmin all looked at eachother before Dan spoke, “I… suppose I can drive you.”
“Are you feeling better yet Dan?” Kate asked, “I heard you got smashed pretty hard.”
“I got it, still sore, but recovering.”
Rebecca strolled off towards the car without another word, Dan following her out. Once the two were gone Jasmin cleared her throat, “So... I… have a new apprentice. I think.”
