I did a rendition of a Rayearthy redesign of the Netflix She-ra years ago because people where claiming that “It’s designs look inspired by Rayearth which was made by CLAMP which was an all woman group so THERE!” and my pet peeve is saying something looks like something else when is really really doesn’t.



The sequel here I think illustrates it better by style-swapping Princess Emeraude and Princess Perfuma.

CLAMP’s Rayearth era stylization is brimming with 3 main key things:
Detail
Volume
and Flow.

While detail of course needs to be simplified for the sake of animation in places, She-ra’s style lacks the Volume and Flow as well; thick hair with depth and clothes that look like they’re made of 5 yards more fabric than is really necessary, all drawn in a way that feels like the wind is gently catching it like even with the volume it’s almost got a silky weightlessness in some parts.

(This is not a jab at Netflix She-ra btw just a visual interpretation of venting a pet peeve of mine. It’s like saying Sailor Moon Crystal S1 looks like the manga when it really doesn’t and you can like the style without needing to justify it by saying it looks like a different style when it doesn’t.)
