Oooooooooo, I LIKIE!!!
Growing-up, one of our favorite hobbies (My three older brothers, and myself), was building models. Papa had a working small heavy equipment business, and a 'Boneyard' of derelict equipment kept for spare parts, that we children literally crawled all over! Rare at the time, 'Working models' were our most favorite (Usually engines, but even powered planes/vehicles from time to time).
I took a few years of 'Drafting' in H.S., and LOVE 'Exploded views/drawings' of vehicles/mechanical stuffs! Planes in particular greatly remind me of the many wood and paper models we'd make, and all the hours of carefully trimming the wooden pieces/spars, then the gallons of white glue to bind them into a completed model! (I kid about the gallons. Sorta.)
You're absolutely correct, however. These gliders, while quite stout for such a craft, were still so damned flimsy and totally unprotected against any incoming ordinance. The Men who piloted them, and those who rode in them were amazingly brave! ('s a bit of a miracle how they ever got off the ground, with Men possessing testes so huge?!)
:-D
