Ever since reading on the South Xiongnu during three kingdoms, i was kinda miffed with how the races are often handled in fantasy. Either they are completely integrated with nothing really unique, or they each ended up with their own factions, which feels like missing alot of nuance (considering how real ancient empires like Rome are often very diverse). You don't really see alot of fascinating real world scenarios where they are semi-integrated, as tributaries eager to please their overlords or Emperor-contracted martial communities like the Cossacks: the people are gradually adopting elements of the wider society, but are still distinctly different.

... Many Dragonborn clans inevitably came into the sphere of influence of larger empires, and a few may have bent the knee rather than fighting to the bitter end. Generations later, these clans may have been entirely contained in a wider empire, becoming basically client states, maintaining their wealth and autonomy via the original peace treaties, and by offering their unique services and loyalty to the throne. The clans themselves would have also changed, as they adopt the new technologies and cultures of their neighbors, like plate armor and feather crest helmets ...
