I'm currently working at a place that just started up and is trying to do custom laser engraving of various things. So in the near future I'm going to be opening up for commissions of laser-engraved badges. Or, more accurately, I'll be engraving art that you provide.
I had made a journal declaring this plan, and asking for people's art. This is what I got that worked for what I was looking to test.
THE DESCRIPTIONS:
At left is a picture provided by
ampdragoness and drawn by
annubrius. It is etched into wood. For this process I need pictures that are straight black and white, shading doesn't really work very well. (Or, rather, shading works OK if the shadow tone is very distinct, but it takes longer to etch so I'll have to work that out better later.) Basically, it wants inked work. These lines are about as thin as I think it'll work very well, thicker lines are better.
At bottom is a similar etch into plexiglass. Picture is courtesy of
Murrahnithahn-i-ia.Similar constraints, it's happiest with pictures where there's a black that gets etched and a white that doesn't.
At right is a picture that's been scorched into wood. With this process, you set the laser to heat up the wood but not cut it, so it darkens. This process takes a grayscale image of any type, such as a photo. Ideally you want something with good contrast so it shows up well. This picture is of
jade-scale, drawn by
hizzie
There was one more thing I wanted to try, namely etching things into anodized aluminum dog tags (similar to the business cards I made for my chainmail), but things got busy and didn't get around to doing it today. I'll try and get an example done tomorrow.
Anyway, I am now officially declaring myself open for commissions for these sorts of things. I will put your art onto wood or plexiglass (only thickness available right now is 1/4 inch). $25 for a 4x5 inch (or thereabouts) image. Currently I am not calling them badges, I'll have to get some badge holders clips and check how to attach them before I'll officially call them badges.
I'll make a journal with more specific information soon.

Oooh, Jade's came out really neat! I love mine- I'm glad I went and swept out any shading and filled in the "shadow" behind the lettering- it works really well. Thank you, thank you! I'm hoping Papal doesn't squeak off a fee from that three bucks- should I send you a bit more on top?
