I recently posted a B/W sketch of Rainbow Dash on some fire breathing chopper. Well here is color of it! I did a couple reworkings of the figure and tried out some ideas for quickly doing color images that I first tried in the picture of the F-84F Thunderstreak http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6012470/ This worked rather well since I was trying to simplify my color work so it would synch with Lauren Faust's wonderful character designs. Generally I am happy with it and it only took a few hours.
The biggest trick was coming up with the Rainbow Dash blue that was not non-photo blue by accident. I've done that and the results are not pretty. I'm also happy how the mane and tail came out. The original was done with my usual colored pencil, marker, gouache and micron pen on bristol board. Original image is about 4"x 11"

How in the hell did you do that? >_> Well the theory is relatively simple. After laying out the final drawing on the Bristol Board I block in Dash's mane and tail with Tombow brush markers to help establish the basic under colors of them. I did a similar thing with the tires of the bike and dark shadow areas of the engine area. Also I may define some parts of the picture with technical pen to give strong sharp edges to places in the picture. I then started applying Prismacolor colored pencil to the piece in light layers. I general work from lightest to darkest.
When I had the initial base colors in I started carefully applying odorless oil painting solvent, I prefer Gamsol from Gamblin, to the colored pencil with a watercolor brush. The Gamsol causes the wax of the pencil to dissolve releasing the pigment which I can then blend using a brush, cotton swabs, paper towels or old T-shirt. This removes much of the wax but leaves most of the pigment behind.
I continue applying consecutive layers of pencils and blending them as I go. This gives me the smooth even color you see. As I'm working I'll also start building the highlights and shadows on the figure. For areas where I want bright highlights I may not put any color down at all. Because I am removing most of the pencil wax from the working surface I can often go back in and redefine areas with the technical pen. Also for bright reflections and edge highlights I'll use white gouache paint to make those areas pop! You can sometimes use a white vinyl eraser or electric eraser to also lighten areas of a picture although one most be careful to not damage the working surface. Is that any help?

Oh this bike is Soooooo not canon to the series! Also I'm relatively certain is all it would take is couple early morning runs through the middle of Ponyville and Dash would find her ground following cruise missile impounded! Heck the thing might wake up Celestia and one really, really does not want to spoil the Princesses beauty sleep!!
This is what I'll say about the show. No, it is not Masterpiece Theater. However with the exception of a couple episodes all of the series is verily solidly written for what it is. A show written for a toy company to primarily sell brightly colored talking ponies. However the sum of the show is greater than its individual parts.
I was very skeptical myself about the whole idea at first having only seen the an episode or two of the original series in the 1980's which were dreadful. However I decided to give it a watch. What immediately caught me was the fact that the main six characters are engaging individuals with hopes and ambitions. Also the land they live in Equestria is a very bucolic place, think The Shire from Lord of the Rings, where one would not mind visiting and maybe settling down some day.

The fact that most of your neighbors would be cute-bordering-on-lovely fillies with strikingly pleasant personalities also an attraction for some of us. The problem for humans and other bipeds would be finding employment. Maybe a business for pony grooming?

LOL! Woo yeah! Horsepower! ^!^
Get your pony runnin'
Head out on the Higway!
Looking for adventure
Making friends along the way
Gotta be the first to make it happen
This pony she loves to race
Takes off the ground real fast and
never looses her pace
Like a knight's trusted steed,
she has a need, a need for speed
She can fly so fast,
but how how long with it last?
Born to fly fa-ast!
Born to fly fa-ast! . . .
With apologies to Steppenwolf, but not to Hasbro, unless they decide to file suit
