My submission for the Thursday Writing Prompt.
The prompt was: "bed"
Within the Enclave universe, Christmas can be a tough time of year for the families of those who've Changed. In this entry, we follow one such family as they make their Christmas Call to the Enclave.
Author's notes: I wanted to describe more of what the world outside the Enclaves looks like, including some of the social changes that are occurring around this time, as well as a few that are just starting to occur. The concept of a "Christmas Call" seemed like a plausible event for those families affected by the Change, and became the foundation upon which to explore some of these ideas.

Yep! In an earlier story, Soline (recovering from her transport sedation) muttered something about her kids to Cyraxis. At the time I didn't think much of it, but as I kept exploring the different characters, I realized that I needed to step into Soline's life from Before, if only through the eyes of her family.
I'd like to think that her kids devote themselves to helping those affected by the Change. Perhaps Thomas becomes a metamorphosis doctor like Doc Kate, and Emmi becomes a PEO, or maybe little Mimi becomes a PEO in the future? Not sure.

Quite the interesting look into what the family from Before is going through. I will admit to wondering how something like this was considered given the Changed have that whole mental re-wiring during the process. Fortunately, seems like Soline is able to take things in stride well enough!

Soline has sunny, upbeat personality, as you observed. Instead of feeling like the Change has cut her off from her human family, she sees things the other way around: her human family from Before is an addition to her family with the Cohort.

OK... now I can properly respond. It's excellent, of course. I can see how you could really expand this. You had the two fighting factions when they were arriving, and the need to be brought in by an armored vehicle. I can see people panicking as more and more people change, leading to multiple attacks on the Co-horts, and so the beginning of how the world was reshaped.

You're tracking things pretty well, yes. I wanted to show some of the developing extremist factions (hinted at in an earlier entry, expanded a little here), and how Stein Biotech / the government is aware of them and taking steps to protect the families of those affected by the Change. Also, we see how more Enclaves are being established, and that treatment facilities are being expanded as the Change spreads. The kinfolk (families with close ties to the Changed) are emerging, and these play an important role in future developments.
The world is indeed reshaped... though maybe not in the way you might think. ;)
