Field Report: Carnosaur population
So, this is gonna be a little different. Instead of a new creature profile, I'm gonna upload a sort of "survey"(?) on the carnosaur population living in a particular region of Arcadia (the one where Lestrad the red dragon lives).
Scholars have noted the presence of 4 adult individuals living in the dragon-controlled region. Alongside them are 2 younger carnos, one of which is going to leave their mother within the next year or less.
"Old Scarah" is a venerable female and the first individual to be tagged and described. Her name, based on all the scars she has, was given to her before the other adult specimens were described.
She used to be the dominant predator of the region, bold enough to fend off other large predators, even wyverns. Ever since the dragon Lestrad appeared, her presence became less prominent. The scars on her body indicate that she lost at least one battle for dominance against the fire-breather. Nowadays, she's been seen taking care of her one remaining offspring and teaching him to show submissive behavior to the dragon (avoiding needless harm).
"Junior" is the offspring of Scarah and likely the last one she will have during her remaining lifespan. The youngster is cheeky and curious, and has shown behaviors that can be described as endearing. His mother does her best to teach him how to act and keep him safe from threats.
"Old Bob" is the dominant male in the region. Around the same age as Scarah, he's close to the end of his life. It is uncertain just how aggressive he used to be, but in his old age, and after more than a few scuffles with Lestrad, he became quite reserved. He is the "old man" of the grasslands, surviving mostly off of carrion or herbivores equally as old as he is.
"Diapristina" is a female in the prime of her age. Off the bat, she is much more timid and mild-mannered than Old Scarah (who may or may not be her mother), and shows no signs of previous battles with Lestrad. Being lower in the hierarchy, she likely stood to the side on most occasions and witnessed firsthand how fighting the dragon can end. She always exhibits submissive behaviors towards the apex predator and has so far remained mostly pristine (aside from minor, mostly unnoticeable scars from fights with other carnosaurs). Her name was given by one of the elven members of the research team (go figure).
"Princess" is an adolescent female and the daughter of Diapristina. She has many traits in common with her mother (mild, submissive, nonconfrontational). She is a good hunter and often aids her mother in procuring prey. She was always noted to be quite afraid of the dragon, especially after witnessing him brutalize the other carnos.
"Bruiser" is the second male in the region and by far the most aggressive one. In the past, he aimed to display his dominance at any opportunity. Unfortunately for him, this led to many beatings from the red dragon. The most recent one crippled Bruiser's left arm and gave him a spinal injury, which (finally) caused him to show less aggression. Not out of a change of heart, but simply due to chronic pain. He is resentful of the dragon and the fact that he needs to survive off scraps left by him.
This is a somewhat experimental format. I doubt I'll do many more of these, unless I get a sudden inspiration (just like in this case). If I do get inspired to do so, then another survey will come and... well, when it comes it comes.
