Sthyrskathal“The Old World,” a world full of magic, threats, and mysteries. But today we're not looking at the dangers of “the Old World,” but rather one of its more relaxed places. Today we're talking about lizards, a ritual, and why you need two big dragons for it.
It all begins in the city of Hexoatl, the City of the Sun. A city inhabited by lizardmens, very ancient race who have experienced a great deal. The race consists of four species: the Slann, the Skinks, the Saurus, and the Kroxigore. Each of them has their place in society. But today, everything revolves around dragons, around macro dragons.
Today was no ordinary day in Hexoatl, because two guests of honor were visiting. One might ask whether dragon scales and lizard scales have anything in common? In any case, Tomragon and Sthyrskathal were guests of honor in the great lizard city. But why were two such large and powerful dragons visiting the lizardmens?
The powerful Slann Mage-Priest Lord Mazdamundi, who was also the leader of the city, wanted to perform a powerful ritual and needed special help to do so. The reason Lord Mazdamundi needed the two giant dragons was because of “the winds of magic.” The invisible and raw energy that serves as the source of all magic. This is precisely why Tomragon and Sthyrskathal are important guests in Hexoatl.
The lizards were a very proud race and began preparing for the dragons' arrival even before they reached the gate of Hexoatl. Only the best lizards were present to welcome the dragons, the so-called “temple guards.” These elite lizards were a subspecies of the Saurus and were the best of the best among all Saurus. They had thicker, harder horn plates and a strong protective instinct. These lizards were also given only the best weapons the people could offer, which was particularly evident in the bone helmets and a type of halberd they carried. Normally, these elite lizards guarded the temples and slanns of Hexoatl, but not today.
The lizards did not know exactly how big Tomragon and Sthyrskathal would be, but Lord Mazdamundi announced that they would be “ huge” guests of honor. It was not immediately clear how this should be interpreted, but the temple guards knew that if it came from Lord Mazdamundi, these must be truly important guests.
The temple guards prepared everything, but the other lizards, such as skinks and kroxigore, also helped with the preparations. The kroxigore were the strongest and largest of all the lizards, perfect for constructing buildings or serving as excellent fighters for the army. The skinks, on the other hand, were the smallest species of lizard, but very agile and nimble. As small as they were, they were all the more intelligent, which meant that they could also be very moody. In any case, the whole of Hexoatl was busy preparing for the two big and powerful dragons.
On the day the two dragons were supposed to arrive in Hexoatl, everything was perfectly prepared. The temple guards stood in front of the entrance and on the wall with their golden armor and halberds. The skinks flew over the city on pterosaurs, known as terradons, and were simply called “the terradon riders.” They scanned the surroundings to see if they could already see the dragons, which they soon did. Kilometers away on the horizon, the outlines of figures could be seen moving directly toward the city. The Terradon riders immediately flew back to report, and everyone got ready. Whether it was the dragons or perhaps even an enemy army, they were prepared for anything. Lord Mazdamundi immediately went to the highest temple in the city, knowing full well that these were the guests of honor he had been expecting.
Silence reigned until a small tremor was gradually noticed, but it grew stronger and more noticeable. The lizards looked at each other, but none of them moved from their spots. The outlines that the scout could see from afar were now clearly visible from the city. A large red lizard with wings in anthro form and a larger blue lizard in feral form were clearly visible. The red lizard shone with its golden armor and the spear it carried. Even before the two large dragons arrived, the temple guards were already impressed by the large red lizard. But the blue lizard was also impressive, especially to the mages, as they immediately sensed its great energy.
The closer the two dragons came, the more the lizards realized that they were not large lizards, but the two honored dragon guests announced by Lord Mazdamundi. Standing in front of the city, the dragons towered over every lizard; the two dragons were simply gigantic! Only Lord Mazdamundi's temple could rival Tomragon in size, but certainly not Sthyrskathal.
Tomragon rammed his spear into the ground and then bent down to the temple guards at the gate who were serving as receptionists. Tomragon saw the lizards and also the open gate, and grinned at the little lizards. Without another word, Tomragon stood up again and picked up his spear, which he had rammed into the ground. He then looked at Sthyrskathal, and without saying a word to each other, they both knew that they were welcome here. They both walked carefully over the walls directly to the large temple where Lord Mazdamundi was.
Why did the two dragons do this? You could call it instinct on the part of the two powerful dragons, but perhaps it was also the magical winds of magic that were taken from Sthyrskathal and Mazdamundi in particular. In any case, the two dragons walked through the city to Lord Mazdamundi, passing through the city as if they had known it since birth, even though it was their first time there. There is certainly more to it than one can imagine, but both walked through the city without damaging even the smallest building, and the lizards watched in awe as such large creatures moved through the city. Many Terradon riders followed them around, watching closely what the dragons were doing. Some even landed on Tomragon and Sthyrskathal. It seems that the dragons radiated a familiar energy, which the lizards noticed over time.
Now the moment had come. Tomraogn and Sthyrskathal stood before the largest temple, where Lord Mazdamundi was located. Tomragon towered perfectly over the highest point of the temple with his head, and Sthyrskathal, who was even taller than Tomragon, looked down at the top of the temple. At the top of the temple, Lord Mazdamundi and the most experienced temple guards, consisting of four saurus, could be seen. And so it came to pass, the first contact between dragons and lizards in this form. Silence returned, and Lord Mazdamundi began to speak, expressing his gratitude that the two dragons had appeared. The dragons listened carefully to what he said, and Tomragon then expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, but they did not know why they were here or how they had found their way here. Only that some kind of energy had led them here, but Lord Mazdamundi knew and explained to the mighty dragons why they were here and how they had found their way here.
A conversation began between Lord Mazdamundi, Tomragon, and Sthyrskathal. It was explained that “the winds of magic” had brought them there, but also that the two dragons themselves attracted “the winds of magic.” This was something that had never happened before in the old world, and yet Lord Mazdamundi was the first to recognize it. In addition, Lord Mazdamundi asked the dragons if he could use them for a ritual, promising that in return they would receive everything the lizard people had to offer and much more once the ritual was complete.
Lord Mazdamundi mentioned that the ritual would serve to tame “the winds of magic” that had been drawn into the city by the two great powerful dragons, enabling them to hatch many new Slann, but also Skink priests, which could help protect the lizard folk from further threats and advance the lizards’ “Great Plan.” He added that everything was already prepared and that the ritual could take place tonight.
After hearing everything Lord Mazdamundi had to say, Tomragon and Sthyrskathal looked at each other skeptically at first, but then they felt that wild energy again. This energy always became noticeable when the two dragons stayed in one place for a long time, and after less than an hour, they felt this energy again, precisely at the moment when they looked at each other skeptically. Sthyrskathal's magical aura in particular illuminated his magical symbols and showed the two dragons that Lord Mazdamundi was speaking the truth.
Now it was a done deal, and at the same time, the two dragons were told that they would be taken to the ritual. The dragons were instructed to follow the four temple guards of Lord Mazdamundi, which was not so easy. It would not be easy for the two macro dragons to keep an eye on the temple guards and their surroundings at the same time. Therefore, Tomragon offered his large claw to the four temple guards and explained that he would like to carry them on his shoulders. This would not only speed things up, but they could also talk to the temple guards.
At first, the temple guards were reluctant and wanted to say no, but then they sensed the energy and familiarity.
Time passed quickly, and the route to our destination was a little different, because we left Hexoatl and followed a river that was guarded by temples and lizards. On the journey, Sthyrskathal collected many Terradon riders and also many skinks on his back. The little skinks had a particular weakness for large, powerful creatures, but Tomragon also attracted attention. The saurs were very impressed by the golden armor he wore.
Therefore, the two large dragons often took breaks along the way and showed themselves to be peaceful and friendly to the lizards. But this made it late, to be precise, nighttime, and so the two dragons arrived at the ritual site on a clear, dark night.
At the end of the river was a lake with a waterfall and many temples. The magic was strong here, and you could feel it clearly. The lake glowed with a faint blue shimmer, and “the winds of magic” became more visible. It seemed as if they had landed right in the middle of Lord Mazdamundi's ritual.
The two dragons saw the lake and knew instinctively that this was the place for the ritual. Tomragon set the temple guards down near a temple and removed most of his armor. Sthyrskathal had already made himself comfortable in the middle of the lake, and Lord Mazdamundi could also see the dragons clearly from one of the large temples that had been built around the lake. Tomragon then cautiously went to Sthyrskathal and snuggled up to his chest. “The winds of magic” were now visible, and although no one knew why, it was suspected that it was due to Lord Mazdamundi's ritual.
It was certainly a sight to behold, two macro-sized dragons relaxing together in a lake, surrounded by lizards and temples. But Sthyrskathal's magical energy, which came especially from him, was clearly noticeable and probably also colored “the winds of magic” in a bright tone, which illuminated the night. It was to be a magical night and certainly an unforgettable one.
The night was still long and will probably go down in the history of the lizard people. Everything could have turned out differently, but everything went smoothly. The ritual was not even finished, and already the lizard people had begun to build something to commemorate this act of friendly exchange of magic. The only question is, what could the lizard people have done to show their gratitude in the most perfect way?
A golden statue of the two dragons? Or a large sacred area with an image of the dragons?
No!
The lizardmens built a large temple near the lake just for the two dragons. A separate sacred building just for the honorable gift of the dragons, and that was not all. The temple was built with a great deal of gold, and during its construction, the dragons were immortalized in the art of the lizardmen. The pose of the dragons as they lay in the lake was adopted without change, and certainly at the right angle with the sun, one could later see exactly what the dragons looked like and how the two lay in the lake. A building that would shape many future lizard folk and would certainly play an even more important role one day. But until then, temple guards would stand here and protect this sacred building as befits an honorable lizard.
