Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (Female)

Here is an AMAZING shot I took this morning and just got out of Photoshop a few minutes ago. This hummer shows all the colors of a hummer and I was ALMOST able to stop the wings, which beat at 60 beats a second, producing a low, soft, bass hum that can only be heard within about 2 feet. This hum gives the bird its name. She was fanning her tail like a turkey, and had her head back swallowing the sugar water from my feeder. I have AT LEAST three in my yard this Summer, all females, and at least one is present all the time. If more than one shows up they FIGHT and chase each other, squeaking like mice. It is ADORABLE. They are not scared of people at all. I took this picture from about 8 feet away.

I agree, amazing shot indeed. Great work! i can't quite make it out, but it looks like you have some ant interlopers poaching your sugar water :D

My feeders are ALWAYS covered in ants! The hummers don't seem to mind. I even have a picture somewhere of a young male giving an ant a ride on its bill!
