Once the snow fort was completed, the backyard became a battleground.
The friends divided themselves into two groups. Remy and Kyle inside the fort, Scott and Bradley on the outside.
They had rolled and packed enough snowballs for a short battle. Soon it was time to begin.
"We must defend this fort at all costs," Kyle told Remy. "It must be protected."
"Whatever it takes?" asked Remy.
"Whatever it takes."
"I say," called Scott in a heavy British accent.
"Who goes there?" demanded Kyle.
"It is I, Scott the Conqueror, and my loyal knight, Sir Bradley."
"We have come to claim this fortress as our own," cried Bradley. He too had an accent.
"Try as you will," called Kyle. "For this fort belongs to us!"
"Yes, try!" said Remy. "For thou shalt not succeed!"
The two guardians pick up their snowballs, ready and waiting for the signal, as did the two invaders.
Kyle gave the order. "Ready, aim, fire!"
They hurled the snowballs at them as Bradley and Scott dodged the incoming missiles. They then opened fire, throwing theirs.
The battle of the backyard had begun.
The guardians of the fort exchanged their snowballs with such fierceness.
They managed to dodge some, while others were direct hits.
But soon Remy and Kyle were faced with a problem. They were out of snowballs!
"What do we do now?" asked Kyle.
"I think I have an idea," said Remy. "Follow me."
They snuck down to the archway entrance.
Scott and Bradley hurriedly snuck towards the fort. For a moment it was silent.
"You give up?" asked Scott.
There was only silence.
Remy poked his head out. "Surprise!"
He and Kyle charged at the invaders, carrying freshly rolled snowballs with them. They hurled them like a pair of baseball pitchers.
"Hey," cried Bradley. "No fair!"
The invaders were riddled with snowball after snowball.
The guardians managed to pull the invaders down to the ground.
Bradley was laughing hard. Remy couldn't help tickling him.
"You win! You win!" he cried.
Soon all of them were on the ground laughing.
"Boy," said Scott, "that sure was fun."
"I declare defending the fort a success," said Kyle.
Remy laughed. "Yeah, though I wish Richard could've joined us. But it's Sunday and he and his family are at church."
"Don't worry," said Bradley. "There will be another time."
"I know." said Remy. "Well, I'd better get home before my mom and dad get upset."
"That's fine," said Kyle. "See you later."
Scott and Bradley said good-bye too as Remy headed back to the gate and back on to the icy road.
Though he was tired, he knew the snow day had been worth it.
