Heart-breaking, but brilliant piece, C-Cat. I think the convention for drawing a funeral piece would be cold colors and heavy shadows, but here you've done it in warm tones and strong lights. I think that's a smart choice, since the focus of the image is on the child's reaction, which probably carries a lack of grief, not out of any kind of disrespect, but simply out of not fully understanding. The brightly colored flowers serve as a distraction from the nose of the deceased-- from his low angle, no doubt the flowers are what he sees best.
But I think the most understated and poignant part of this picture is the woman leaning over the coffin. In her dark clothes standing behind the child, it's almost easy to forget about her. But when you take the time to see how she's gripping the coffin's handle and has her weight leaning forward, it's easy to imagine her unable to stop crying as she looks at the deceased. You don't know, since her face is out of the frame, but that uncertainty tells of the boy's confusion in that moment even more.
Really outstanding piece, C-Cat.
