My handsome boy, Yomu, with his adorable son, Yuto. Yomu is one of my D&D characters that I have grown very attached to. He's a daimyo samurai who is Lawful Good and lives by the code of honor. This art is for a contest on Vgen. This piece took 17 hours!!! x.x
He grew up with only his father, until he too passed away while Yomu was still very small. He grew up with a servant caring for him, like his mother and father. They were all he had. He vowed to be a great leader like his father, never allowing himself any fun. Even when a boy similar in age, whom he trained with, tried to get him to have some fun, he couldn't. He felt like he was betraying his father. It took until he was 18 and recruiting a party to stop a war that he learned to let loose. They showed him he could relax and have fun. They showed him they were his family now.
He even met his sister, whose ideals were far from his own. She was raised by their mother and left alone young as well, but she lived much more barbarically. Not understanding the ways of a city. The rules didn't make sense, nor did the morals. You had to do what you had to do in the wilds. Yomu cast her away and told her he never wanted to see her again if she couldn't find it in her morals to spare people in fights. Not to outright kill them. She didn't want to learn, and Yomu said she wasn't his sister and needed to leave the city.
When he met Yuto, a scared boy all alone and living in a sewer, he had to chase him down when he ran and jumped into a swirling pool of water to save the boy when he fell in. He only thought of the boy's life and not his own. Able to grab onto Yuto and have his companions pull him out, they were able to save both of them. He adopted the small boy like he was his own, and eventually, he might as well have been his own.
Yomu gave the boy his family ring and taught him everything he needed to know. The party also saved him from his own Lich father, who Yuto unknowingly carried the phalactary of around his neck. The father had planned on taking over his body, not caring what happened to him. It was hard for the boy to understand after they killed him. They had to destroy the phalactery. Eventually, he came to terms with it and let Yomu take proper care of him, as well as their close companions. The two could relate in many ways, but Yomu wanted to be there for Yuto. Both their fathers couldn't be there for them like they needed to, in different ways.
Yomu eventually found his real mother and persistently pursued her. She was a dragon! Bound by duty to protect a sacred item the party needed, she wouldn't reason with them. Yomu begged his companions not to kill her, and they were able to knock her unconscious and take the item. Taking one of her scales, he made it into a necklace. Yomu assumed his mother would never forgive him for what they did. At least now, he knew he was part dragon. He had always assumed he was a dragonborn. Even the picture of his mother, father, and sister, she looked human.
His mother came to him late at night, disguised as a rat. She turned into her human visage and told him she was proud of him for doing what he needed to do, and to spare her. She left, thinking he would never be as strong as a dragon, but he proved her wrong AND humbled her. Embracing him, she kissed him and showed him his first blood-related affection. His father was always too stern and proper. Occasionally, his mother would visit him and give him information he needed for his mission.
