iirc, they would get women to pee on wheat, and whether or not it sprouts would indicate if the woman is pregnant. HOWEVER, the truly weird shit comes later in like the 1800's where they injected a pregnant woman's pee into a frog, and if the frog would make eggs, it would indicate pregnancy. Science!!
The neatest part is that the Egyptian method can also include both wheat AND barley. Like RegretfulRaccoon said, if the wheat sprouts, it is likely the woman is pregnant. but if the barley also sprouts, it is thought to be a boy. i cannot recall specifically, but a second seeds was included in the test to also tell the sex of the baby.
It amazes me how they figured these things out, back then. Like, did some pregnant person go and piss in a field and be like "well, that patch of wheat grew really well. maybe it's because I was pregnant?" Or, did they actually have an understanding of.... enzymes and stuff, or whatever. All very curious.
Cities facilitated the accumulation of knowledge tremendously. They did not have knowledge of enzymes, but pattern recognition became much more useful as data/information could be gathered and tested.
Humans did tend to defecate and pee in the same locations, cus it was more convenient that way + you know where the bad bodily waste is located so you do not have to worry about it elsewhere in your home/territory. Even animals kind of does this (but primarely in the form of "We do not shit/pee where we sleep" kind of way.
It would not surprice me, that people noticed that pee affected plant growth, and that pee from pregnent women affected plants differently from non-pregnant women.

Unless she was saying "We really shouldn't get hammered the night before my royal wedding because we will be shitfaced at the ceremony..."
I realize Zummeng incorporates lots of hybrid creatures in her stories, and that these sneks are pretty much mammals with scales, but...my brain has been hurting all day trying to figure out if she's going to lay a clutch of eggs that will hatch into fennecs with and bushy tails, or sneks with huge ears, or what the hell...?
I mean, maybe they're like the Red Martians on Barsoom, in that they lay eggs which then hatch into human-like babies, right?
Ow. I need to go take some more aspirins...
