Oh what a year. Undoubtedly my least productive yet since starting my comic, with just 10 pages produced. It doesn’t even have hardly any extras. However, it has some sequences with some of the best outputs I’ve produced since 2022! Sure, there were some flops and disappointments, but on the whole I’m glad I took the time I did to make the rest the best that could be.
Jan – Not a lot of options on this month. True, a critical part of the comic story, but much of the visuals were geared towards displaying emotion to inform the dialogue's tone more than standing on their own. There wasn’t that many outcomes that I was particularly thrilled with, either. This, I believe, was technically a rejected shot. Certainly, I wish I had done a bit more to brighten up Rederick’s eyes. But, coming back to this month to review and choose, this one struck me as a good conveyance of his reaction as he made the connection through Blythe’s slip of the tongue. Rederick is always difficult to get expressions out of, in large part owing to choosing brown for his eyebrows (matching his hair, which really only gets depicted in commissions.)
Feb – Ah now this was a tough choice. This one, or the one where he’s pulling his ears? Both are my top choices for renders in this month. As with most of this year, only a single comic page was produced. Being one of the most important pages in the comic, you’d think it’d have lots to choose from, but not really. The flashback/memory shots didn’t work out to anything special and much of action was relegated to the mirror as Yeltsin looked on. This one perhaps didn’t work out exactly as I wanted, but I think it has strong points. I am fairly pleased with the shadows, I think the shirt looks fantastic, even if it’s a but of an unnatural way to clutch it. Yeltsin’s expression is a bit weaker than the other shot and there’s a lot of empty space but something about it is eye-catching.
Mar – As is increasingly the tradition, March was virtually barren. Somehow I always seem to contrive some period of development efforts in this month, most commonly setup for a sequence change. I don’t know why it often works out that way but my tendency towards multiples of threes probably makes the a cyclic comic creation process more likely. All I can figure, anyways. Development was largely spent on the hallway for the next sequence. It’s mostly a spruced up copy of the setting that Dr. Gravitas confronted Blythe in, earlier around page 51. However, the chosen WIP here comes from testing I did for the crowds that populate the pool area for the sequences after that. I am terribly fond of my pool area and especially my Crowd Zone Builder script. Said script grew even further as I devised ways to help build up the setup methods for areas. I produced generic day/night settings for the pool zone-crowds, as well as gussied up inheritors for special page=specific settings. The mixer from before, the rave, the late night where Kean and Yeltsin enjoy each other’s company in the giant hot tub.
Apr – This was definitely the break-out shot from this month. Kean’s first real appearance and I’m incredibly happy with how he looks in the shot. Key to getting this right was being able to practice his sculpt a couple times with statics that wouldn’t appear fully in the scene. I prefer to treat all sculpts as something that will be fully viewed (even when I plan for it not to be) though I do try to keep things moving. With that approach, I was able hone in on his anatomy. Ultimately, the best sculpt of him was in another shot but it didn’t translate well to the final panel due to the restrictions on the camera angle I wanted.
May – How could I not? Even friends commented on how they liked the cute little tail wagging Yeltsin joined in on in this last panel of the sequence. In all honesty, this comic/chapter has 3 endings of a sort. This is the first. A place I could cut the comic and be fairly satisfied. It’s not the most important one, but it’s one that sufficiently implies the most important one. I love the idea of them walking into the white void together like that and was very happy with the timing and camera angles I ultimately arrived at.
Jun – This page was kind of a let down! I was disappointed by the compromises I had to make and ultimately the effort wasn’t where I wanted it. This panel was somewhat emblematic of that. This cute, but it just falls flat. I should have made the cream on his nose bigger, properly rounded off what’s in his glass. His face was intended to be goofy and cross-eyed but it just didn’t live up to my intent. My tendency to imagine things more like a movie than a comic tends to make it less obvious with a single still image isn’t going to convey what I imagine.
Jul – Personally, I don’t think anything rendered in this month should really be considered NSFW. Some skimpy clothing that wouldn’t be out of place on a beach, some light nudity in the background. Nothing special. At least it ought not be. Sure, draw the line at erections or sexually-charged contact. But a butt or some jiggly bits? Naw. Sadly, internet culture is increasingly paranoid and reserved leaving this space blank. In protest.
Aug – I was tempted to go with the expression at the moment when he says “I’m gay.” Certainly, the more pivotal moment, but visually speaking this one just strikes me more. The moment I saw it and the lighting, I knew this sequence was going to work. I poured a fair bit of effort into ensuring the lighting would work out and I think this was the moment I saw it was going to pay off. Yes, I did have to dramatically edit the background in post to get that the way I wanted but it was worth it.
Sep – Another tough choice. I do rather like how this alternative shot (that became a giant, standalone bonus render) turned out, but is it a match for the original idea and the more symbolic one? Hell if I know, but hot dang look at that water-based caustic lights! I *never* get caustics to work like that when I try and here the come out of no where automatically! I was so happy.
Oct – As is my prerogative, I chose a cropped version of a rejected shot for this clean choice. Technically, there’s a fully nude fourth body of Dr. Gravitas just to the right of the cropping but whatever. There were very few truly clean shots. There were certainly more important shots from this month, and cleaner shots, but the composition here interests me more. Finally, a sequence that gets to show of Dr. Gravitas in the way I imagine him and this shot feels the best representation of that.
Nov – Technically clean! He’s fully covered, by clothing! I was quite pleased with how well the coat worked out. I used the exact same “twirl around” trick I did for when Rederick put on his coat some 70-ish pages back. I felt the pose didn’t get the view it deserved so I went ahead and cropped it in such a way that it’s the focus here, lol.
Dec – If I had pressed a little harder, not run a certain turntable animation trio that took way longer than it should have, or maybe not set aside the last week of the month to spend at my parents, I probably would have finished a whole new comic page in this month. Yes, despite MFF and the holidays. I was one panel away (plus post processing-work) from its completion when I stopped to set up something to run while I’m away. Oh well, we’ll just have to wait until I release that page to unveil this choice! Hint: it’s something I’ve long waited to show off :3 Eh? That’s not what I did 2 years ago when I had something I left blank then updated only after I ensured the page released in the same month? Well too bad! It’s my Review and I get to run it however I want, including inconsistently!
