This started out as just an EGA hi-res pixel art follow-up to "Stocking Stuffer" from advent25 revealing what became of the lynx lady and the squirrel man in her stocking, inspired by how cute I found the original scene. Partway through it, I had the idea of adding the original piece as a flashback, which necessitated redrawing it as pixel art as well, so this ended up taking a bit. I originally did the present-day picture and the Christmas morning picture as separate images before I combined them both to finish them off.
The lovers panel was itself divided into two components between the squirrel himself and the rest of the panel, for it started out as a low-res sketch of the squirrel in his cute dress that I drew in Pixquare during my lunch break. I then used Aseprite to draw the figure on my desktop in higher resolution before placing him on the 640×350 canvas and drawing the lynx whose shoulder he's standing on. It took some work before I figured out how to go about their outfits in a way that would be the most interesting to me. I also got experimental with the abstract background because I'd worked out how to properly use dither brushes in Aseprite and wanted to try them out in an interesting way.
Not to be outdone, the "Stocking Stuffer" redraw required not only adding detail that was hidden by the chunky blocks and narrower canvas of its ANSI art original, but also redrawing it in a different aspect ratio from the original's 1:1 to match the other picture. I also had to fix numerous anatomical and structural oddities in that piece that would pass in "low-res" ANSI art but not in high-res pixel art, and in some cases study how other artists did what I wanted to draw to figure out how to do so in my style in this level of detail.
I feel the final result came out well. What do you think? :3
