Tom and Bianca walked through town, taking in all the sights and sounds.
People seemed very friendly, saying hello to one another and letting people in the crosswalk go first. Cars wouldn’t beep, everyone just seemed peaceful.
“Seems like a really quaint town, don’t ya think B?”
Bianca watched a kid with his mom run while holding a balloon, a smile on it’s muzzle. She smiled.
“It does. Definitely a change from the past two towns. Thank god.”
They continued walking, observing everyone and the general calm that emanated from all the furs around them. They felt relaxed for a change, Bianca not even pulling out her tablet to see if any one area had a high demonic level. It was if the most relaxing and idyllic town had been shown to them, letting them believe, even briefly, that they could rest.
“I think we should check out a place to rent a room or a motel. Something where we can drop off our bags and just chill. I’m beat from all this walking.”
The fox flexed her back, her oversized backpack threatening to knock her over. The diminutive woman grunted as she pushed herself back into a standing position.
“Sounds good to me. I think after that we can grab a bite to eat. I haven’t had anything since we had those bagels on the road. My stomach is rumbling something fierce.”
Bianca laughed.
“That’s the football player in you, always thinking of food. Let’s go get the rooms first. Then we can eat.”
“Fine, fine. Let’s go.”
*
“I can’t believe the only place in town to stay at is an apartment and they want us for SIX months! What a ridiculous thing to do!”
Bianca slammed open the door to a diner and rushed in, her rolling bags almost hitting a poor tabby leaving with her two kittens.
“Rude!”
“Sor-sorry!”
Bianca tried apologizing, but the cat had already left. Tom just shook his head, almost laughing.
“No one does well getting on your bad side, that’s for damn sure. That woman just wanted to enjoy a nice meal and not have her or her kids run over. Couldn’t even do that!”
He joked with his smaller friend/partner, who still seemed agitated.
“Hardy-har-har. Stop being a jerk and go ahead of me. I want to check my phone real quick to see if any of the other places we were looking into have news.”
She had barely gotten her phone out when she noticed that Tom was not moving.
“What gives? Why aren’t you going ahead of me?”
Tom just pointed in front of her.
What Bianca saw completely shocked her. There had to be at least 30 furs in front of them, all anxiously waiting to be seated. She looked over and saw that all the tables were full and no one seemingly wanted to leave.
“This place is friggin packed!”
“Never seen a place like this before, it must be the only restaurant in town or something”, Tom said as he watched a couple leave and the line move up.
“We literally just passed four other places to eat on our way over here and they were dead. I guess this food is just that good.”
As they waited, Bianca’s gaze turned over to the counter, where an incredibly ripped Doberman sat alone, devouring food but somehow keeping his shirt clean. He stripped the meat off of a roasted chicken wing and let out a small burp.
“That’s a big fucking boy”, Tom said, a little jealous of the dog’s arms. Even in his prime, Tom was nowhere near that jacked.
“Do I sense a bit of resentment? From the All County Running Back of 2013?”
“I’m just saying, he’s big. Almost as big as that purse that polar bear is carrying around.”
The two looked over to see a petite and proper woman seated next to the Doberman. She was much shorter than his 6-4, and definitely a good hundred or so pounds thinner. She was dressed in a fashionable dress, one that hugged her voluptuous body. Tom gave her an appreciative look over, though it was apparent from how the woman was talking to the canine,
Tom was NOT her type.
“Yeesh, that’s a Louie Gator. Those things are like 5 grand a pop. Must come from money.”
“I have no idea what a Louie Gator is.”
“It’s a company that, never mind”, Bianca replied, before she rolled her eyes as her partner remained oblivious to her disgust.
The line kept on moving until eventually they were right before the hostess. Tom turned over towards the counter, and saw the polar bear lift a French fry and place it in her mouth. He gave her a sheepish smile, which was met with a look of disgust. Tom frowned at this, which elicited a laughter from the massive dog next to the polar bear.
“Ha-ha, don’t let it get to you pal. Paris here doesn’t tend to talk to many people in town, especially those who are a little lower on the social ladder and out of towners.”
The dog laughed loudly, his bellowing laugh clearly agitating Tom. The horse put his hands in his sweatshirt pocket, his fists clenched in anger and annoyance.
“How can you tell we’re out of towners”, Bianca asked.
“Because no one from this town would wear “THAT” outside of their home”, Paris said, scoffing at Bianca and her outfit.
“Uh, we may be from out of town, but I still know how to deal with someone who is a pompous…”
Before Bianca can make a move towards Paris, Tom steps in and pulls her back. He eventually can calm her down, but not before Bianca gives the bear the finger. The smaller fox has always been feisty, especially when angered.
“Well, while this meal was very enjoyable, I tire of this. Roger, honey, I’m going to go home. You are more than welcome to sit and chat with the riffraff.”
The bear rose from the stool and with her confident stride, walked towards the exit. Tom did his best not to stare but ended up watching her shapely rear jiggle ever so slightly in it’s tight confines. It put a dumb look on his long face, one that made Bianca shake her head in disgust.
He realized what he was doing and turned nervously towards Roger, who stood from the stool, picked up the rest of a turkey wrap and stuffed it into his maw. He walked up to Tom and slapped him hard on the back, all the while chewing his food loudly.
"He-he, it’s all good brother. She ain’t mine, I’m just one of the few people in town with as much cash as her so she talks to me.”
“Oh, I uh, well, I wasn’t trying to.”
“It’s ok, don’t bother explaining it. Save your breath, you’re going to need it for the food you’re about to eat. Best in the city and probably best in the state. Been coming here every day since it opened up two weeks ago and it just gets better and better.”
“Everyday?”
Bianca was puzzled, as she didn’t know of any place that warranted such dedication.
"Yep, every single day. Great food and plenty of options. Why do you think there is such a long line?”
He pointed behind them as he finally finished chewing what was left of his wrap. The massive Doberman adjusted his white tank top, his muscles rippling as he did so. He looked back at his now empty plate and sighed.
“Probably shoulda gotten something to go. Ah well, always can come back for dinner. Anyway, you two take care.”
He turned to go, but before he did, he turned back to Tom.
“And a little word of advice, shrimp. It was rude of you to look at someone who may have been another person’s girl. Next time, someone may not be as forgiving as me. Might wanna hit the gym, or you could get your ass kicked, get it?”
He gave Tom a poke in the arm with an index finger, causing the horse to wince in pain. The dog left, laughing as he did.
“Fucking overgrown muscle bound jackoff”, Tom said as he rubbed his now sore arm. Too bad he’s not a demon, I’d have enjoyed sealing his ass up for eternity. Sorry B, that didn’t sound right. B?”
Tom turned back to his friend and partner who was just looking around the diner, a pensive look plastered on her face. Her tail was somewhat up, a sign that she was a little concerned.
“Bianca? You ok?”
“I don’t know. It is a little strange that this place is this packed.”
“It’s lunch time Bianca. And didn’t you say the rating wasn’t even a two? How could this be the influence of a demon?”
“I hope you’re right Tom.”
There was a moment of silence between the two friends that is only interrupted when the hostess called out their name and led then to two empty spots at the counter. They sit and watch as the staff works vigoriously to get things done.
“They really move fast back there, huh”, Tom asked as he adjusted himself on the wide stool. Even with his powerful lower half, the stool was oversized. It was very comfortable however, and he had to admit he could sit in it for an extended period of time.
Bianca adjusted herself in her seat as well, her large tail flopping over the back of the stool as she positioned herself properly.
“Yeah, they do. Good thing too, with how big that line is”, she replied as she looked towards the door. Even though it was after the typical lunch hour, people were still waiting in line to eat. “I’ve honestly never seen a place have this many people around before. Food must either be really good or really cheap.”
Both furs picked up their menus right around the time that a very happy penguin waddled her way up to them.
“Hi there, welcome to Zendra’s Café. My name is Anna. Would you like to start off with a drink? Today is Wednesday and that means half off milkshakes whenever you order a burger or any of our sandwiches.”
Tom glanced at the shake chart, his eyes focused on a few good ones.
“I haven’t had a milkshake in forever, I could go for one. Any of these a favorite of yours”, he asked as he held out the shake menu.
The penguin smiled.
“They’re all actually really good. I’ve had them all, as you can tell”, she said as she pointed to her stomach. While not large, it was rounded out and protruding just a bit with er apron on. “But, if I had to pick one and only one? I’d go with the peanut butter Oreo cheesecake. That is if you love peanut butter. If not, the Mocha fudge brownie is really good too.”
Tom bobbed his head back and forth, mulling his options. He loved fudge, but he was a die hard fan of peanut butter. The two demon hunters really did not indulge on the road, but now, in the diner, Tom decided he would.
“Well, I’m kind of on vacation, I guess I’ll go with peanut butter. Oh, and I’ll take a double cheeseburger with American Cheese and sweet potato fries.”
“Gotcha. Do you want pickles, onions, etc? Any sauces? We have literally 40 kinds.”
“I can do pickles, onions and lettuce. No tomatoes, not a big fan. As for sauce, I can go mayo and ketchup. Thanks.”
Anna wrote the order down and turned her head towards the slight fox, who was seemingly less enthusiastic about getting a milkshake.
“Um, I guess I’ll do a tuna salad on rye. With a glass of seltzer. And a side salad.”
Both Anna and Tom stared at her, wondering why she was completely ignoring the deal. Bianca glanced up at them, and, after seeing Tom nudge his head toward the waiter, relented.
“Fine. I will do a single patty burger, no cheese, no condiments. Lettuce, tomato, onions and pickle. A baked potato. And a vanilla shake.”
“Thanks, I’ll put this in and be right back.”
The rubenesque penguin waddled away to put in the order, leaving the demon hunters on their respective stools.
“A little pushy, wasn’t she?”
“What? Come on B, she was just being friendly.”
“By trying to get us to clog our arteries? That’s “friendly”?”
Bianca tapped her thin fingers on the counter, before she scanned the diner once more. Furs were enjoying their food, consuming it with big smiles on their faces/muzzles.
“I mean, there seems something off with this place, don’t you think? All these furs waiting in line, wanting to eat at a place that’s only been around for a few weeks? You don’t think that’s strange?”
Tom looked around too, seeing everything that Bianca had. He sensed no demonic energy, even doing a quick spell that would cause a flash if there were demons around. Nothing happened.
“Do you sense anything? Seriously. I don’t and my detection spell came up with nothing. So, I think you may be off.”
“I think you’re off, Tom. I really do.”
Before Tom could respond, their food came out. Both were surprised to see the size of the burgers, which were much bigger than the typical quarter pound burgers, definitely weighing at least half a pound. Tom also had a mound of fries, and the shakes they received were at least 32 ounces.
Anna smiled as she dropped the food, though she could tell neither Tom or Bianca were appreciative of what she had provided them.
“Hehe, you two are obviously from out of town. Here in Carmel, we tend to have an abundance of food most of the year, and Zendra has decided that the community should enjoy this. Usually it would just go to waste, but since buying this diner, Zendra said we’re not going to do that.”
Bianca frowned her brow.
“I see. And Zendra is the otter back there?”
“Oh yeah. She’s from around here. Left to go to culinary school and came back successful and decided to give back by making a restaurant that serves good, quality food at a fair price. Really, she’s helping out so many people.”
The penguin clearly meant what she said, as she was smiling the entire time and not seemingly reading a pre-written message, or a slogan.
“I can tell, this food is friggin good!”
Bianca glanced over at Tom, who had already taken several bites of the mammoth burger. His long muzzle was covered in ketchup and mayo, but he didn’t seem to mind. He eagerly took a handful of fries and stuffed them in his mouth, before taking a big swig of his shake.
“B, you HAVE to try the burger. It’s so tender and juicy, nothing like the ones we’ve been stuck with on the road.”
Bianca was hesitant, that was for sure. She couldn’t shake the idea that a demon, more than likely a gluttony demon, was responsible for what was happening. However, like Tom, she had not gotten that reading or anything from conjuring’s to prove this. She relented, taking a bite.
Instantly, her taste buds were flooded with the succlent taste of a nicely cooked hamburger and fresh vegetables. Her mouth seemed to move without telling her as before she realized it, two more bites had been taken. She used her arms to put the burger away before turning to the baked potato. She hadn’t asked for it to be stuffed but apparently the chef decided to do it for her as a favor. Sour cream and cheese leaked out from the top of the plump side dish. She used her fork and took a bite, the tastes immaculate and phenomenal. Her eyes closed and she went for another bite, then another.
She would have kept going if she didn’’t feel her throat start to tighten, almost as if demanding a drink. Without warning, the fork was put down and the cold beverage was in her hand. She brought the white liquid to her lips and let the chilly delight rush down her throat. She took an even larger second gulp, her mind thinking back to days as a kid and getting ice cream during the summer. She couldn’t believe how good it was, it seemingly providing an out of body experience.
The brain freeze stopped her chugging of the shake, and brought her back to reality. She looked down to see that somewhere between trying the baked potato and the milkshake, she had taken a few more bites of her burger, with now only a quarter of it left.
Tom was doing far better than Bianca as his burger had only a bite or two left and his fries were all gone. He was happily slurping his shake, enjoying the combination of chocolate and rich and creamy peanut butter. His tail rocked up and down, emphasizing his happiness.
Bianca stifled a belch as she thought about the food once more. She didn’t want to eat anymore, as this was usually all the calories she consumed in a day, let alone one meal, but her hands had a mind of their own it seemed as they reached for more food.
“Tom, urp. I think I’m going to call that woman with the apartment after this. Contrary to what the magic and tech is saying, I think something, fishy, is going on”, she stated as she reached for another helping of baked potato. “Something, chew, is amiss.”
“Burp, whatever, you, urp, say B. You’re the boss. If you want, maybe we should really set up shop here, do more research.”
“Yeah”, Bianca thought as she ate another bite of potato. “Research.”

“Research.”
