Delightfully decorated and read to eat omnomable onigiri from the kitchens of
archadia
First time I'd made onigiri. I like to make my husband an occasional bento to cheer him up, like the bunnies one. This time I had an easy time of it. You can really put about anything in onigiri.
For these I used:
2 c jasmine rice
4 c water
1 can light beef stew
1 tsp garlic
1/4 c onions
2 Tbsp beef gravy mix
sprinkling of parsley
sea salt
-garnishes-
cut leaf lettuce
grape tomatoes
nori
This was very simple. I cooked the rice in my rice cooker according to the package directions. While it was cooking, I reduced the leftover soup that my husband didn't get to eat (because we don't live in a perfect world where everyone gets a lunch break). I stirred the gravy mix directly into the soup canteen while I cooked the onions and garlic until tender (a few minutes in my saucepan with a bit of cooking spray) and then poured in the beef stew/gravy mix. It took about as much time to reduce it down to a good filling texture as it did to cook the rice, about 15 minutes on my cooker. I took the rice out on a plate to cool and added a bit of salt. I wet my hands to work with the rice and made a handful-o-rice bowl for the filling, covered it up with a little more rice, and then used v-shaped hands to manipulate it into the traditional triangle. I experimented with different sizes, as you can see. The biggest could hold the most filling, of course, but not by much. After making the triangles, I separated them in his bento dish with some firm leaf lettuce and filled in the leftover space with one of his favorite snacks. The nori flowers I cut with a scrapbooking tool. If you are going to decorate with nori, make sure you do it while the rice is still quite warm and moist. I had to use a dampened chopstick to pick up the tiny flowers and stick them on. Onigiri is really great for getting rid of a little bit of leftovers while looking pretty!
