this day i decided to do a bit of a deep dive on network routing protocols as part of trying to become more knowledgeable for any sort of interview questiosn for new positinos i might apply for!
I've never had to mess with routing configurations or troubleshooting in my previous jobs, so i thought it might be about time i became familiar with these, given some of the requirements for the different kinds of job i could apply for, and given my job at this time in 2025 (firewalls)
Since i spent a while reading about these and thinking about them, decided to make an illustration of how i think of each of these different routing protocols, based on all the stuff i read... basically, they can be either Interior Gateway Protocols (IGP) or Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGP).
RIP, OSPF and EIGRP being Interior Gateway protocols (they take care of routing inside internal networks)
BGP being an Exterior Gateway Protocol (it takes care of routing essentially around the internet)
these are both simplifications of the concepts, and by no means a proper understanding of them, but this is how i more or less absorbed the knwoeldge! i don't really have much personal experience configuring any of these or getting familiar witth them, so this is my best effort at trying to grasp them >w<
