I participated in a Secret Santa with a group of friends this year, and I was tasked with drawing one of my OCs talking about their favorite Christmas dish to prepare.
So I drew Chimi discussing her favorite dish and some alternate Chinchillan tie-ins for a Yule Log!
There are many, many dishes I love to prepare for the holidays! However, when it comes to tradition, Chinchillan palates are a bit unique, and not for everyone... We are, after all, largely vegetable, fruit, seed, and grain eaters! However, there is one traditional Christmas dish that I've found works extremely well with my family's tastes while maintaining that spirit!
The Yule Log cake!
The tradition calls for a chocolate cake, a buttercream filling, and a chocolate frosting outer, designed to look like a log! However, with a little experimentation and research, I have found many variations on the dish, so I made my own! I substitute the chocolate cake with something closer to what we Chinchilla folks call a "Sun Cake" or "Sun God Cake"... Poulipōuros Chérné, in our tongue! The cake is full of zesty ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and some citrus zests like orange and lemon. Macadamia or psitachio nuts often go well baked in too! I then prepare a honeycream filliing sprinkled with fresh chopped sweet basil and thyme for the roll, which pairs well with the cake. For the outer layer, I still keep the chocolate frosting, but I add some Chinchillan chilli for a little extra familiar warmth! The end result is something sweet, spicy, savory, and even a little earthy while being unbelievably decadent! In Chinchillan custom, it's meant to show the merciful love of a Sun God presenting a bounty of an earthen harvest grown by his warm sun rays to his followers... But to those who aren't Chinchillan, it's still seen as a very unique and, to doubters, usually ends up a surprisingly delicious combination of flavors!
From my my family to yours... Merry Christmas!
