Understanding the forward face of a critter can be hard. They can look odd (look up forward facing bald eagle for an example)
I found tho a way to help figure out a face? When your still in the find out stage? Play with some clay and feel them out. Don't have to be super detailed since it's just you trying to understand it too.

Oh yeah they look so derpy from the front XD
But that is a really good idea! I was thinking about playing in blender but uuuh well I’m not very good with 3D so clay would be much better o3o
