After Vershaft graduated from the AGATE program, he returned to his homeworld for a brief period to be with family. But the training had changed his perspective on things, and not in ways that entirely suited the idea of a normal civilian life.
Within six months of return, he was already back in space, working in a pseudo-apprenticeship program on board Ring Seven, an orbital shipyard and spacedock in planetary orbit. Here he turned theory and controlled situations from AGATE into practical hands-on experience and intuition, working on spacecraft, sometimes newer ones as an extra hand, but far more often in refitting and repairing ones that were already used.
This wiring job might look easy but there's probably a bigger story behind that mess...

More of a technical background. He doesn't engineer ships from scratch, but he repairs them and works inside the limitations.
AGATE is focused on turning out hypercompetents, so he's the guy who can tell you exactly how hard you can push the system.
Think the scene in Iron Man where the computer says, "this isn't safe", and Stark says, "I know the math, it works, just do it!"
