People will do just about anything to clear their debts, and when you're 15 million in debt you have to take drastic measures that you'd not risk otherwise. In this instance it's entering the exclusion zone and hunting for artifacts. You'll encounter who knows what within the zone, from spheres that hypnotize you to zones that absorb all light. However one of your first encounters with anomalies will typically be seeing objects float in the air, held up by nothing.
This piece depicts one of the areas you'll come across within Project Silverfish called the 'black lake'. Great game if you love S.T.A.L.K.E.R style games.
