Next time you're in the shop, you should put that on top of somebody's tool box when no one's watching. Laugh as the mechanics will neither know who put it there, or what in the holy hell happened to this poor tie rod.

Actually you're not far off.... That's a stress fracture where the metal fails at a stress point making it look like it was cut through......

sometime in the past it was bent a bit and a crack started at the root of a thread. then over time the crack kept getting deeper (the rust rings show that) untill poink !!!
