Name: Mary Nasson
Location: York, ME
Date: 1774
Carver: Robert Fowle
Ms. Nasson apparently was an herbalist who was known as "the white witch" by locals. She was accused of witchcraft due to rumors. When she died at 29, her husband had a rectangular slab placed over the length of her grave- called a "hog stone" - to deter grazing cattle from walking over her grave. The legend has it that he placed it there to keep her from crawling out
These days people leave coins and other offerings on the hog stone as tribute..
The inscription:
"Here lies quite free from Lifes
Distressing Care,
A loving Wife
A tender Parent dear
Cut down in midst of days
As you may see
But - stop - my Grief
I soon shall equal be
when death shall stop my breath
And end my Time
God grant my Dust
May mingle, then, with thine.
