Last month,
hamakei and myself did a small tour of some of Bavaria region in Germany. Hamakei was interested in some of the locations related to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, with Neuschwanstein castle at the top of the list. Quite impressive, even if a bit over the top in the interior decoration. All tours are guided and cover only a small section of the castle.
We also wanted to walk on the bridge seeing there, but unfortunately it was closed that day due to weather.
If anyone decides to visit, it is at the top of a hill, so either pay for a carriage pulled by horses, or a modern bus (neither of which takes you all the way to the castle). Or if you have strong legs, walk all the way to the top.

It is. You can see why Ludwig wanted to build his life there, rather than continuing to live in the centre of Munich where the monarchy was originally based. The short, short version is that Ludwig's dad already had a castle in the area, and Ludwig would spend his summers there. So he decided he wanted to live there full time, and started construction of his own, bigger castle nearby (that's the one in the picture). But he kept starting construction on numerous castles and only one of them was ever finished in his lifetime (not this one - Linderhof)
Linderhof - actually finished and he lived there
Herrenchiemsee - vastly unfinished, still unfinished and he only lived there for a few days
Neuschwanstein - mostly finished, but finished after he died and now the biggest tourist attraction out of them all
Hohenschwangau - his father's castle, and near Neuschwanstein
Falkenstein - Planned, but never got past the design stage
