If you think about it, it doesn't make sense that this Pokemon is called an Alolan Sandshrew. Alola is an archipelago, and island civilizations were historically isolated for millennia, so ancient Alolans wouldn't have had the Kantonian Sandshrew for reference, particularly since their version lives atop snowy Mt. Lanakila.
