The other day, I was watching a lone gull fly out and land in the middle of the reflecting pool when it kind of hit me. Due to the nature of flight, pretty much all flying creatures would float on the water, not just waterbirds like ducks or gulls. Of course, it's hard to know how a dragon would actually fly, but I'd imagine a relatively low density, which would mean high buoyancy.
So what if dragons floated on the water like ducks? It struck me that I had never imagined myself doing this before and didn't remember seeing anyone depicting it before either. So I asked
fraisala if she could draw me floating on water and this is what she made, loosely inspired by my draconic form.
She has also uploaded this image, so please check it out here.
A couple other interesting things I found when researching flying creatures and water:
This wikipedia page about adaptations of birds to water and fish to air is pretty interesting if you're an animal flight nerd.
And this account and photos of two bald eagles who got tangled together and crashed into a lake is pretty amazing Don't worry, they make it out alive just fine.
