It's peaceful here, he'll give it that much, but he knows the only reason it can be a sanctuary for him is because he's only one mammoth. A herd would destroy it—especially his herd.

Every moment he stays here, they're moving on. Though even if he found them again, would they take him back? Could he make up for what he did? For lost time? Perhaps it's better for everyone this way.

The problem is he doesn't know that it's better.

Maybe deep inside he's aware the choice has been made for him. His pledge to his master, his oath of pacifism, even the medicine that soothes his thoughts and makes the nightmares go away are all masking the truth that beneath it all, he simply doesn't have any fight left in him.
