Kha'eshan Bestiary: Shnorfant (remake)
oh look, the second Kha'eshan creature to get a remake. Honestly? This one was needed since the previous version... it wasn't big enough. This is more accurate to the original size I envisioned.
The Shnorfant is one of the largest herbivorous mammals native to the coastal grasslands. As a descendant of the Long-Eared Sniffler, it already had access to a long, nimble nose that developed into a true trunk over millions of years. The Shnorfant is, by all means, Kha'eshan's version of an elephant.
These large beasts travels the vast grasslands, grazing and browsing on all available vegetation. They will eat anything from grass and leaves to entire tree branches.
Regarding adaptations to life in a hot, tropical environment, Shnorfants went further than elephants. Aside from having large ears, they also possess a dewlap sack, all to shed excess heat. These adaptations become especially useful during the dry season when temperatures can become unbearable.
Much like Earth's elephants, Shnorfants travel in small herds of females and their young. The oldest and most experienced female leads the herd. Males travel alone or in bachelor groups, always on the lookout for females… or potential threats.
The two greatest differences between Shnorfants and elephants are
1) Lower intelligence: While not stupid by animal standards, Shnorfants are noticeably less intelligent than their Earth counterparts. They have good memory and use it to traverse their environment, but when compared to elephants, their problem-solving skills are far less developed. They are more comparable to horses in that regard.
2) Threats: While adult elephants hardly ever need to fear predators, the Shnorfants live in an environment that houses beasts far more formidable and dangerous than any lion or hyena on Earth... Humans very rarely hunt them (all due to their size), but reptilian predators are a far more common threat.
