My internet was down again so I decided to finally draw my idea. It is actually two ideas I had in my head and I was gonna do it for the 100 years of Balto project but never got around to it. The first one is kind of obvious from the lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0ZHlp6atUQ . The older I get the more I appreciate the father son relationship Balto and Boris has. It is not our family by blood that matters- it is the ones we choose. (I also just realized who sings it- that is kind of funny XD)
My second idea has been in my head since I started drawing Balto art. I had this Readers Digest book with a short version of The Call of the Wild (Jack London) and it had illustrations by John Schoenherr. Been looking like crazy for these artworks but they are nowhere to be found. I found his other works but not these ones. After years of searching I recently got my hands on the book again. The last one if of Buck in the snow listening probably hearing the call of his wild brother. Even if the anatomy of him is a tad off (back then you could not just google a ref) the lighting and composition and feeling of the artwork never left my mind. Now I finally can do my homage to that as well. The weirdest part: in my head the image is flipped. Buck was facing the other way. Could be the printing since I no longer have the original book from my childhood. The other three were facing the right side in my head so it is weird.
I combined the two ideas and I am very happy with the result.
