This is Sage Birchwood, originally from Maine but trainhopped to PA after being kicked out at 16 by his adoptive parents for how he presented, and being gay. He found a small place in the woods with some abandoned shipping containers where he set up a sort of home.

Eventually he meets Basil Sylvestri, and falls in love with him, eventually moving into a real home with Basil.

Sage avoids eating meat and eggs once he's able to afford doing so because being forced to kill for food alone in the woods is a bit traumatic I imagine, he's still ok with dairy though.
