There are a few remarkable hand-lettered books from the 15^th Century on (after the advent of Gutenberg's printing press). They became quite popular for a while in Georgian England; perhaps the style trickled down to the Colonies.

I do know many of the more schooled artists got their inspiration from book illustrations. Allan Ludwig's 1966 book Graven Images goes into that in detail.
